Blacks themselves, along with pc white liberals, demanded that the term African-American be used (instead of black) when the "political correctness" craze swept liberal circles in the 90s. On college campuses and in workplaces, whites became subject to reprimand if they did not use the correct term. I remember jokes about how rats were now demanding to be called rodent-Americans.
