It's cool Electro, allow me to elaborate a little bit... Quote:
Few general things here:
The term "African-American" is a stupid invention, in my opinion. It doesn't add any extra information to the description of a person, as it's only used to indicate the colour of skin, not some 'cultural heritage'. Half of the US population can't even point out their own country on a worldmap, let alone say something that makes sense about Africa and its inhabitants.
I agree, the term "African-American" is a broad term used to describe a skin color, not actual ethnicity. I could be wrong, but I believe the reason the term was used in the first place is because many black folks had little to no knowledge of where they actually came from due to slavery and almost non-existent record keeping, so it was general term.

Secondly, why the need to keep pointing to your family's past and/or the country they came from generations ago? It's not as if the average US citizen or the US as a whole hasn't achieved anything.
I'm not sure if you've ever been to the US or not, but we're such a diverse country, with so many different people from different places that we tend to cluster in groups with similar ancestry. For example, there's a huge population of Irish in Boston. Also, in my neck of the woods (Pittsburgh) there are neighborhoods that are almost all Polish and some that are mostly German. Being that you're from a country that's probably the size of the county I live in, I can understand why you don't necessarily get why we're this way. It's definitely not the fact that we aren't proud to be American, because we are, but we're also proud of where we came from and how we got to be here.

Next, the referral to traditions is mostly used to emphasize one's own 'good' sides and, vice versa, to stereotype other groups' behaviour as inferior/less desirable. Traditions are a milder form of religion.
The traditions I’m referring to are the types of food we eat, the music we play, and the way holidays are celebrated. I fucking love potatoes. On my Irish side, we’ve been eating them with almost every meal since we came over on the boat…is it a sterotype? Yes. Is it true in most cases, probably. I’m more inclined to believe that religion is a type of tradition rather than the other way around.
Quote:
Viz, you state your ethnicity as 'Irish, Scottish, German', and continue to descibe yourself as 'Irish-American'. Why not Irish-Scottish-German-American? Or Scottish-American? Or German-American? I think there's more tradition and historical heritage to be found in Germany than in Ireland.
It was only an example, you’re reading far too much into it.
