WASILLA, Alaska, July 3 (UPI) -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announced Friday she will resign as governor by the end of July and will not seek a second term in 2010.
Palin, Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate last year, said Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell would be sworn in as the new governor July 25.
Speaking outside her home in Wasilla, Alaska, Palin said being a "lame-duck" governor would have been the "easiest path" as she approaches her final year in office.
"Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional 'lame-duck' status in this particular climate would just be another dose of 'politics as usual,' something I campaigned against and will always oppose," she said.
"People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska," Palin said. "It is my duty to always protect our great state."
She said she talked to her family and "determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things."
Some considered Palin a possible front-runner for the Republican nomination in 2012, and her resignation fueled speculation that she might be planning a run for the presidency.
In an interview last month with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Palin said she was unsure about whether she'd seek either re-election as governor or the GOP nomination.
"So, no decision yet on either 2010 or let alone 2012?" Blitzer asked.
"No decision that I'd want to announce today," Palin responded.
Palin did not take questions at Friday's news conference.
She said the new governor's administration would build on the accomplishments of hers.
"I look forward to helping others -- to fight for our state and our country and campaign for those who believe in smaller government, free enterprise, strong national security, support for our troops and energy independence," she said.

but I think it was this " compromising shot" that got leaked to the press......and why she will not be attending the Jackson memorial tribute-

I prefer Newt but I am open to other choices. Someone in the repubs needs to step up like Obama did for the dems. It had better not be Palin or another retread or they will lose another presidential election. I don't know enough about any of the others including the indian guy to make a decision as to whether i like them or not- Newt agrees with me on most issues, that i do know. Palin is fine for gov. of alaska or even a legislative branch post out of Alaska- she should never be mentioned again for President unless they like losing or she becomes a genius overnight.

Probably edited for content: Speaking outside her home in Wasilla, Alaska, Palin said being a "lame-duck" governor would have been the "easiest path" as she approaches her final year in office, don't you know. "Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional 'lame-duck' status in this particular climate would just be another dose of 'politics as usual,' something I campaigned against and will always oppose," she said. She continued to ramble on about the "filter" of "mainstream" "media" and their insistence upon "gotchya" questions (e.g. what newspapers and/or publications do you read?) "People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska," (Annual sessions begin in January and are limited by statute to 90 calendar days; the population of Alaska is less than Multnomah County) Palin said. "It is my duty to always protect our great state." (from what?} She said she talked to her family and "determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things." {from what?) Some considered Palin a possible front-runner for the Republican nomination in 2012, and her resignation fueled speculation that she might be planning a run for the presidency. {Man, I hope so, I mean if this broad is the standard-bearer for the Repugs, should result in even more Democrat pickups) In an interview last month with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Palin said she was unsure about whether she'd seek either re-election as governor or the GOP nomination. "So, no decision yet on either 2010 or let alone 2012?" Blitzer asked. "No decision that I'd want to announce today," Palin responded. [Don'tyakno2w, Wolf] Palin did not take questions at Friday's news conference. [OF COURSE NOT!] She said the new governor's administration would build on the accomplishments of hers. "I look forward to helping others -- to fight for our state and our country and campaign for those who believe in smaller government, free enterprise, strong national security, support for our troops and energy independence," she said. [At which point, she hopped upon her snowmobile and rode the fuck out of the press room] ---------------------------------------------------- but I think it was this " compromising shot" that got leaked to the press......and why she will not be attending the Jackson memorial tribute-

It may be time for a centrist third party, leaving the religious right and racists to the corpse that would then be the GOP, focusing on libertarian issues.

I almost scotched my career...
I think Palin is doing what I would do - cash in on her moment of fame (book, speaking tour), if something happens in 2012 (Repug win, appointment to a cabinet post) fine, if not, spend the rest of her life in comfort in the north woods and leave a nice legacy. She no longer has any use for the office of Governor.

But, who knows? By 2012 she might even be able to memorize the 3 countries of continental North America.
The good ol' U. S. of A., our friends the Canadians, and Alaska, don't ya' know.
That's why no TV show, no talking heads show tour, she just doesn't have the knowledge. She'd get chewed up on Hardball.

The Daily Beast had some conjectures on a possible scandal that may yet haunt her -
Did a scandal sink ...

Palin is not an answer to anyone's needs, unless it's a need to beat off to failed politicians. The thought that she could lead any party with the exception of a swing party on a Saturday night is absurd. Real conservatives, not those in the mold of Pat Robertson, but real fiscal conservatives need to find a spokesman for the message of fiscal responsibility and leave People Magazine types like Palin behind. She needs to go back home, take up her former mayor's job..or better yet do some really good anal gangbangs for JM, and get out of political life.

She's still got power. She's a campaign-funds-raising phenomenon. Doubt anyone in the northeast would touch her - being tainted with her would be a death warrant here - but in the South, the "big sky" and parts of the mid-west she could have influence. That said her power, whatever it may be, scares the fiscal conservatives and the Neo-Cons since they see her as an anchor that ties to the party to the older, white, Christian rural base. The Democrats see her like the Republicans saw McGovern & Mondale - someone they'd love to run against. So, right now I believe that any and all attacks are coming from factions of her own party. It'll be interesting to see how Fox plays it. They've piled on her before. Personally I think she's leaving so that she can keep a better on eye her 14 yo daughter. If that girl gets knocked-up before she's 18, after all the stuff they spewed at Letterman, PURE COMEDY will ensue.
