Orthodox Jews burn Indian wigs
NEW YORK, MAY 18. Orthodox Jews here are burning their wigs made of human hair. They are following the example of their counterparts in Israel after some Rabbis banned their use, declaring them to be ``idolatrous.''
Married women in orthodox families are not expected to bare their hair, and they wear wigs. Retailers, who have stocked thousands of expensive wigs, are now taking them off the shelves in the orthodox Jewish areas. In Brooklyn, bonfires of wigs were set. Wigs made of human hair cost more than $ 1000 (about Rs. 45,000) and the hair comes mainly from India, China and Indonesia.
Hair from India is prized for its texture. But now Rabbis say that once the hair has been offered to an idol, Jews cannot use it. The ban is not based on the religion of a person but on the fact that it has been used in a ceremony and presented to an idol. Tirupati, where thousands ritually offer their hair, is one of the major sources for human hair from India.
