"There is absolutely no proof of a hate crime," said John Gill, special counsel to Knox County District Atty. Randy Nichols. "We know from our investigation that the people charged in this case were friends with white people, socialized with white people, dated white people. So not only is there no evidence of any racial animus, there's evidence to the contrary."

The pc local authorities also later tried to give the animals the benefit of the doubt by insisting that deliberate dismemberment and mutilation had not occurred. They contended that the bodies just ended up that way in the course of the other crimes.

Would this be called a hate crime if the animals had been white and the victims black? And would these animals have attacked a black couple?
