The Pelikan idea is good. There are tons of nice, good quality fountain pens out there -- Waterman, Parker, Rotring, etc. The nib is probably more important than the brand name. I had a cheapo parker fountain pen at some point but it's nib was awesome. The more gold content, I think, the softer the nib. I know Rotring used to make devastatingly good rapidograph/tech. drawing pens, as did Pelikan.
