Have you tried a fake Amazon.com or a fake pawn shop?

If you are going to spend $$ on a quality fake, you might as well just buy stolen.

Panzer, aren't you in NYC? My aunt took a five day trip there and came home with a fake Prada purse some guy came up on the street and begged her to buy. She talked him down to $40. You don't have those guys all over the place?
But, she had been sewing as a hobby for years. So, she could look at it and tell quality. Maybe that's your concern? How to know if it's a good quality fake?
I know these places, they are in Chinatown and in Queens. But they all sell obvious fakes of low-to-medium quality. I want a high-quality fake! I can spot a fake purse from 10 feet, usually it is the stitching or the zipper that will give it out as a fake. There are some quality Rolex fakes that go for around $500.00, I read some watch forums and they said that those fakes are so precise that they can even fool a Rolex expert. These replicas pretty much weight almost the same as real Rolex, they do not make ticking sounds, they have exact magnification on the date area, etc.

Sounds like a waste of $500.

I obviously want to pay less than $500, more like $200.

If you can't afford a real rolex , you shouldn't be wearing a fake one .
You're still going to pull up to the club and valet your 2001 Hyundai Accent , and only tip the guy $3 .

I write a lot and have used many pens. If you want a fountain pen that is high quality (the only type of pen that really still demands a high price for quality craftsmanship and materials), I would recommend a Pelikan over a Mont Blanc any day. It may not be as recognizable to the average schlub on the street, but it is a better quality pen at a fraction of the price and people who know anything about quality WILL recognize it and won't think you're a sucker for buying a Mont Blanc. If all you want is a ballpoint or rollerball, anything off the shelf at your local Office Depot is just as good as any name brand pen.
Any inner city pawn shop will have second hand genuine Rolex watches for sale dirt cheap.
I think that there are many things that people without money or "class" (for lack of a better term) buy to look like they have wealth or prestige or "class" which impress only people who have no money and don't know any better and are obvious signs of ignorance and outsider status to anybody who has money. Two of the best examples of what I mean are Mont Blanc pens and Rolex watches.

I really use the Parker Jotter pen, I have 2 of them: for office work and home use. I am pretty much satisfied with it, it is pretty well balanced and writes well. And for the watches I use Fossil. The stainless steel one is the one that I wear 98% of the time.

The Pelikan idea is good. There are tons of nice, good quality fountain pens out there -- Waterman, Parker, Rotring, etc. The nib is probably more important than the brand name. I had a cheapo parker fountain pen at some point but it's nib was awesome. The more gold content, I think, the softer the nib. I know Rotring used to make devastatingly good rapidograph/tech. drawing pens, as did Pelikan.

I have only ever used the type of fountain pen that you have to dunk in an ink well for calligraphy.
What is the appeal of a fountain pen over a ball point for writing a letter?
I am curious as to why any pen is better than another as long as your writing is legible and if it's just an aesthetic thing these is no need to explain because I can see the difference.

If it is used correctly, a fountain pen writes differently than other pens. You don't have to write differently if you don't want to (and most people new to fountain pens probably don't), but once you get in the habit, it is an obvious difference.
The ink flows off the nib of a fountain pen so it is more of a wet paint brush technique rather than a PRESSURE technique of the average ballpoint where friction and pressure makes the little ball roll and allows ink to get applied onto the page. If you write a lot, and you use a fountain pen the way it is intended, it is much smoother with less fatigue or "writer's cramp". If you write the same way with both pens, you'll never notice a difference and wonder why you wasted the money. If you buy a fountain pen with a cheap nib or poor craftsmanship it will not write well, the ink won't flow (or will run way too much or be blotchy) and it will feel "scratchy" and cheap.
Oh, yeah, and if you apply too much pressure to a thin or fine nib on a fountain pen, you may permanently damage it and ruin your pen.
Think of it as the difference between a paint brush and a chisel.
Edit: Oh yeah, and if you don't write a lot, it probably really isn't worth it to get a fountain pen. There is a damn good reason why ballpoints and rollerballs became the standard. They are cheaper, easier, less messy, and work better, and make an imprint (for carbon paper or checkbooks).
But if you write a lot or for a long period, fountain pens and fountain pen ink (and don't forget the various options of ink--from thick to thin and all different colors) is the only way to go.

There was a scene in the movie "Doubt" where Meryl Streep's character complains about ballpoint pens that I thought was very subtle and wondered if anybody who doesn't use fountain pens knew what she was talking about. I can't remember the quote, but I thought it was pretty interesting.

Once Panzer gets a Montblanc, by hook or crook, he'll need good ink if he's chosen a fountain pen. I used to have a small bottle of Waterman ink. Can't remember the shade of blue but it looked amazing. For everyday use there's the old and trusted Parker 'Quink'.
