Fatman, you should seriously look into getting a entry-level RAID system of some sort -- those external USB drives (especially if they are the smaller ones containing 2.5" laptop drives) can and will fail anytime, and heat and cat dust will only accelerate it.

Check into a DROBO or something similar, unless the contents of those drives is truly disposable.
