(CNN) -- Dr. George Tiller, whose Wichita, Kansas, women's clinic has been the target of anti-abortion protests for years, was shot and killed at his church Sunday morning, his attorneys said. Laura Shaneyfelt, an attorney with the firm of Monnat and Spurrier, confirmed Tiller's death to CNN. The 67-year-old doctor was one of the few U.S. physicians who still performed late-term abortions. He survived a 1993 shooting outside his clinic. Wichita police said they were searching for a powder-blue Ford Taurus in connection with the killing, which took place outside Reformation Lutheran Church shortly after 10 a.m. Police spokesman Gordon Bassham said witnesses provided a license number of the car the killer used to speed away from the church. suspect caught...white male in his 50's or 60's...sounds about Right. Sedgwick County 911 dispatchers are confirming that the Johnson County Sheriff's Department has arrested a possible suspect in Dr. George Tiller's murder. A car matching the description of the vehicle wanted in the killing was pulled over near Gardner, KS. Kansas City television stations report the stop was made along I-35 near Gardner, south of Kansas City. Dr. Tiller was shot and killed this morning at his church. Authorities were called to a shooting at Reformation Lutheran Church in the 7600 block of E. 13th Street at 10:03 this morning. Sources close to the investigation and the controversial abortion doctor confirm that George Tiller was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after emergency crews arrived. Although Police Captain Brent Allred is not formally naming the victim of the shooting, he does classify the case as "high-profile" and that the victim has been the target of violence in the past. The police department has scheduled a news conference at 4 p.m. this afternoon to discuss today's events. The suspect's car is described as a powder blue or light blue Taurus with a K-State vanity plate, license number 225 BAB. He is described as a white male in his 50's or 60's, 6'1," 220 lbs, wearing a white shirt and dark pants. The car is licensed to Merriam, Kansas. Several church goers have been taken to City Hall for interviews. Earlier this year, Tiller was acquitted of 19 misdemeanor criminal charges that he did not follow state law when getting a second opinion on late-term abortions. A jury acquitted Tiller of those charges on March 27. On August 19, 1993, Tiller was shot outside his East Wichita abortion clinic by pro-life activist Shelly Shannon. He was wounded in both arms, but made a full recovery. Shannon was eventually convicted. why is it only the right wing that takes it to this level...and we are supposed to fear animal rights activists and eco freaks who torch SUVs?

Another interesting tidbit- while watching the news coverage of this asshole shooting the doctor I did notice that most of the "christians" interviewed came out and and said that the shooter was evil and wrong for doing what he did. I do not find this same attitude amongst those that fear the pig and biting dog.

Perhaps you could point me to the broadcast of the mourning mooslams, missed them too.
I get really irritated at all the anti christian propaganda that gets bandied around especially when one looks at the scale of it. The the number of abortion docs killed by them falls way behind the number of victims killed in the name of that other so called religion. Let me be clear anyone killing in the name of a religion has missed the point and should be shunned by those of that religion.
So I guess, you and a few others on this board will have to agree to disagree with me.

Both sides of the same coin mate. Both as bad as each other, of course western religious extremistism is lesser, but it still occurs, and throw in Catholics (Northern Ireland as well) Just that Islam has a tighter grip on Middle Eastern society & law.
Christianty has been just as bad as the past- witch burnings, spanish inquistion, and could be again if certain things occur (goverement, church, law & society become all meshed into religion) Although we have checks to stop that occuring, if a religious group overthrow goverement (Iran) same shit.

The difference between the Christian nuts and the Muslims is that there is no church/state separation in Islamic countries.
If it was up to the Christian nuts, the US wouldn't be much better than any place run under Sharia. Think Inquisition.
It takes constant diligence to halt these assholes. Whether it's abortion rights, stem cell research or their attempts to subvert our science education with "Intelligent Design", they are doing their best to derail our society and our ability to compete with China, India, and the EU.
If we don't whack their knuckles at every opportunity, we'll be as backward as the Arabs in 600 years.

And what is the doctor doing in Wichita anyway? I'm amazed he wasn't run out of town years ago for killing babies - there are plenty of people there who look at late-term abortions just like that. Nobody would care if he did late-term abortions in Berkeley CA, but Wichita?

And their Koran actually tells them that if they kill (martyr) themselves to take out infidels (non-muslims), they will be rewarded with "72 black-eyed virgins" (sex slaves - lol) in the afterlife (besides a sweet crib).

Yes. I am all for eugenics. Send people who are doomed into organ banks to provide kidneys and eyeballs for folks who might experience longevity.
EDIT: This line of reasoning is weak, what if they were the next Einstein or Hitler or Feynman? Yes, I agree that people who have terminal diseases from birth can do great things. Nothing any more or less great than healthy people.

I think it's obvious to anyone with a shred of human decency that the above should not be allowed. Belief in God is not needed to recognise this. Even if you go 100% for the "womans body, womans choice" line, I defy anyone to justify why they couldn't just evict the kid but let it live. She was 7 months along and so quite capable of surviving outside the womb, even possibly without an incubator. Tiller made sure to kill her by injecting potassium chloride into her heart before delivery.
As for punishment, that's really not the point I am trying to make. I just wanted to inject a little balance into the thread. You really think it takes an extremist Christian whackjob to off Tiller, when he did the above deed, thousands like it, and continued to operate with impunity with the law powerless or unwilling to stop him?

Although I am pro-choice and anti-shooting people (most of them), I have no problem at all with the argument Bigs is making.I never bought the fact that some thing in a stomach was in any way a 'person' after 4 weeks, but as our medical technology becomes more advanced, ethical questions are going to pop up. What is the earliest a baby can be born prematurely? What kind of life can a kid with even the most horrific disabilities expect as medicine advances? On a more serious note, there was a really well written piece in Slate today ( Tiller's Killer ) which argued forcibly from both sides of the debate and really pointed out the difficulties as you move further out to the margins:

What would I do if I were an unwed pregnant teen, 6 months pregnant with a fetus that has been diagnosed to have severe physical and mental disabilities? I'm less certain now than I used to be. I am relieved I don't have to make that decision.

The problem with the comparison is that Tiller killed maybe 16,000 late-term babies whereas Scott Roeder killed one 67 year old man.

I think you've missed the point. He is arguing that by killing the Dr. additional deaths have been prevented.
Killing GWB would have no effect on prospective war dead, but would arguably be 'punishment' for those already killed indirectly by him.
