At first I thought this was about "Full Metal Alchemist" and State Alchemy.
Quote: People cannot gain anything without sacrificing something. You must present something of equal value in order to gain something. That is the principle of equivalent exchange in alchemy.
Quote: I think the quest for more energy output than input can be likened to alchemists attempts to turn lead into gold. Hence usage of the term.
Huh.
I thought it was because fusion changed one element to another ... Hydrogen to Helium, for example
I know my favorite physic professor used to call Rutherford the first "real alchemist" for converting nitrogen to oxygen with radium as his "philosopher's stone".

It's called "fusion" because nuclei *fuse* together to form a different element. In fission a nucleus splits into either more than one nucleus, or just a different element plus debris.
All of those reactions result in debris along with the new nucleus/nuclei. Some of that debris is referred to as "radioactivity".

I thought Bornyo was saying "alchemy" because of the element change in "fusion", like how they called Rutherford an "alchemist" with his fission experiment/discovery.
Instead B says it was elusive quest that led him to the allusion.
