“Oh my God, I F**ked a Murderer.” On Sunny Dae & Jason Andrews

Op/Ed by Karen Kougar on her sexual encounter with murder suspect Jason Andrews & on meeting his girlfriend murder suspect Sunny Dae
From the Wonderland murders to the bizarre and tragic rampage that took the life of Tom Dong and injured two others earlier this week, the adult industry has always been shadowed by a small, vague cloud of violence. The public frequently includes this in their stereotypes of the business; but I believe that we as performers often minimize or ignore the additional risks posed by various characters we encounter in our work.
As I browsed an industry trade website earlier this week, I happily recognized the photo of a woman I had worked with last year, Sunny Dae, before I realized the headline read “Prostitute Performer Arrested For Murder”. As I read on, it became clear that the other primary suspect in the case, Jason Andrews, was another performer on that set. In fact, the shoot was where they had met. Having been there when “Bonnie first fucked Clyde”, so to speak, Cindi asked me to share my feelings about the story.
I never imagined that I would cross paths with brutality in the form of the individuals described in the story, and my goal is not to sensationalize the events; but to perhaps add some shading and detail to what has been a surprisingly sketchy and underreported news event. My exposure to the characters involved was very minimal, but so few facts have been published that perhaps I can still contribute some small insight.
In late September, 2009, I was hired for a marathon content shoot for a DVD and website producer based in the South. The week-long production was centered around roughly a dozen performers in a rented house in New York, all shooting in combos with each other. Ambitious cougar that I am, I volunteered for the first scene to be shot – a five-guy gangbang.
My first chance to meet Sunny was during preparations for that scene. She seemed very sweet, with a killer body and cute Southern accent. However, one of the men in the rotating group of talent was a young, black, rising star who has since gone on to be well-acknowledged as a solid performer, nice guy and quite an enjoyable lay. Sunny’s reaction to seeing him was to inform us that she “didn’t fuck black men, that’s just how she was raised”. Although my resume of adult work was limited at that time, I had done interracial scenes, and this may have created some distance between us, though there was no tension on set about it.
Jason and the aforementioned black talent were both part of the group that was scheduled to bang me on the first morning, and as setup progressed they at first seemed to bond a bit – both of them having recently served in Iraq. By the time shooting began however, tensions had developed between the two of them, apparently over remarks Jason had made intimating he felt superior as a combat vet to the other talent, who had served in a support role.
My husband, on set that day, recalls that his pre-shoot conversations with Jason were friendly and enjoyable. Jason was very animated while they discussed his additional careers as a club disc jockey named DJ Veritas, and as a “casting agent” recruiting first-timers for gay porn. His combat experience came up several times as well, referencing a continued PTSD-related anxiety issue.
Gangbangs are especially difficult scenes to shoot, and this was no exception. In addition to the mounting tension between to the two guys, the set itself was extraordinarily uncooperative. The first plan was to place me on a dining-room table – which proved to be a painful exercise in geometry for everyone involved. By the time we had reset for my DP to be on the couch (much better), the combination of the bruised knees, bent egos and hot lights had accelerated Jason’s oncoming anxiety attack, and he had to leave the set. He spent the time while I finished with the four other guys talking with my husband, unloading a tortured tale of high anxiety and self-medication. He provided the money shot for the gangbang scene later.
I stayed at the shoot house that night. Jason and Sunny also both stayed at the house, and he proved to be a popular roommate. Women outnumbered men by a large margin, and Jason became close friends with several of the girls during his stay. He was cute, very charming, and had a British accent that fit his roguish demeanor. By the time shooting began the second day, he’d relaxed considerably from the day before, and was ready for a boy-girl with me.
Jason was an athletic, vigorous co-star – we went from an inverted, standing sixty-nine right into a standing straight fuck with him supporting me through the whole circuit. We ran through a catalog of positions, I came several times, and he finished easily this time. A good scene overall, and a problem-free day. We exchanged numbers, and said we’d work together again. Due to the ongoing rescheduling of the week, my girl-girl with Sunny never happened.
My next contact with Jason was in late April of this year. I had seen him Tweet that he was in South Florida, and since I was planning to be there for Exxxotica in May, I Direct Messaged him to ask if he’d like to shoot. My message went unreturned until May 13, when I suddenly received a flurry of excited DM’s from him. He said that he and Sunny were married, and living in Tampa. They were doing all sorts of shooting, and were super-eager to get together to work and play with me. He sent me their phone number twice in that exchange, and asked me to call to set things up. I left a voicemail.
Although media reports are unclear, it is alleged that two days later Sunny and Jason robbed, stabbed and then bludgeoned a man to death in New Port Ritchie, FL. From the accounts, one of them crushed his skull with a sledgehammer. Apparently, they texted each other throughout the time leading up to the murder about the thrill of the experience, and how much they looked forward to enjoying the associated sexual release with each other when it was done. The man was robbed of $6,000 cash, a laptop computer and some small electronics. Jason was arrested using the victim’s credit card at Home Depot, and Sunny at her husband’s residence in Georgia, where her nine-year-old daughter still lived.
I barely knew Sunny. I knew Jason somewhat better, but we spent more time having sex than conversation. Yet these two people have affected my life more profoundly in the past few days than I could have imagined. I’m not as focused on the idea that I may have narrowly dodged a horrible fate, but the weird realization that “Oh my God, I fucked a murderer.” Without trying to add levity to a tragic situation, I’ve bedded a lot of assholes in my day, but *that’s* scary.
When relating this tale to friends outside the industry, too often the response has been along the lines of, “Well, it is a bit of a sleazy business – I suppose you can expect to run into some rough characters”. I find myself defending my experience in adult – telling them that the vast majority of the people I know in the business are hard-working, good people in a job they enjoy. There has been a snake in the grass or two, but my experience in the business has been overwhelmingly positive.
However, things are a little different for me after this week. I’m still looking forward to my upcoming shoots, and to moving forward in the trade that I love; but that small, vague cloud is there: the shadow of violence.
