Going Dutch - How I learned to love the European welfare state Nice article, which explains nicely how things work over here. It might be an eye-opener for some of the more anxious reactionary forces on here, but maybe I hope for too much open mindedness. Anyway, have fun.

The article doesn't seem tremendously accurate, it describes your system as having "universal" healthcare coverage, when it's actually state-regulated private insurance. That's significantly different, it costs around €100 a month for the basic cover and is not funded out of that horrendous 52% tax rate, so cannot be used a a valid justification for it. Also, despite being supposedly mandatory, people do fall through the gaps. I know of someone who quite recently avoided seeking medical care in Amsterdam because of the cost.

Am glad someone made the effort of actually reading it. The EUR 100 for basic coverage is partly compensated for by the government, depending on your income. But you are correct in your assessment that it ain't a real 'universal' coverage. Quote:

That's just plain stupid. If one is insured (basic coverage), the insurance company pays everything after the first EUR 155.00. If someone is not insured, it's their own fault and, eventually, you will get hunted down for not being insured. This will get you some nice fines, up to EUR 100 per uninsured month.

Bla bla bla. That's all well and good for the old world. America was built by pioneers who believed in rugged individualism. That's why we're superior to your stupid little country.
Unfortunately too many of our later immigrants have been from parts of the world with undemocratic, collectivist traditions. As a result, we finally have a lefty internationalist (rather than a patriotic American) in the White House. It may be the beginning of the end. America could devolve into a Western European-style welfare state and then finally into a Mexican-style shithole. Thanks liberals!

Not to be a dick or anything but...
If Socialism(Euro Welfare State variety) is so superior to Capitalism(War Mongering American variety)....why is there still Poverty,(Higher)Unemployment and Fiscal Deficits in those countries?
