The Padres are a shitty team and the season was basically over before it started. I don't have a good reason as to why I still watch. But I do.
Adrian Gonzalez is a monster though.
I still can't believe they brought back Giles for $9 million. What a waste.

Looks like a five-game winning streak, what with leading Baltimore 9-4 in the 7th.
That's a 35-8 margin during the streak.
The 3/5 rookie pitching rotation is tightening and Matt Holiday is hitting (already up to .291), realizing that he would be good trade bait to get the fuck out of Oakland.
Then again, this is at the expense of the anemic White Sox and the accursed Orioles...

All you need to know about the A.L. Central is that Kansas City just finished a thirty game stretch where they went 7-23 and they are still only 4 1/2 games out of first place.

The Cardinals are in 1st and they probably have enough to win the NL Central. However, they don't match up well against the Phillies, Dodgers or Giants so it really doesn't matter.

Yeah, but the Pirates are pretty much a minor league team so they don't really count.

The last two nights have been shining examples of the balance of the Kansas City Royals. They can give up one run and lose one night and turn right around and score nine and lose the next night. How long until training camps open?

Our fucked-up and inconsistent star Dany Heatley is demanding a trade after we have thrown millions at him.
In other news, we just threw millions at Alexei Kovalev, Montreal's fucked-up and inconsistent star...

JFC, Zack Greinke has had 21 starts with 18 quality starts, a 2.08 ERA, a strikeout to walk ratio of almost 5.5 to 1, a hits to innings pitched ratio of .90 and the fucking Royals record in games he has started is 10-11. When you look at the statistics he is pitching better than Cliff Lee did last year (everything is near equal except Greinke's ERA is half a run lower) and Lee went 22-3. Greinke will be lucky to get 15 wins this year. He has had five straight quality starts and the God damned worthless Royals are 0-5 in those games.
Here is how Greinke ranks in various categories in the major leagues
ERA-1st (2.08)
Complete Games-1st (5)
Shutouts-T1st (2)
Quality Starts-T1st (18)
Quality Start %-T5th behind four pitchers with one start this season (.86)
Strikeouts-3rd (153)
WHIP-8th (1.09)
Tough Losses-T4th (5)
Cheap Wins-0
And now for some wonderful statistics for the Royal Flushes.
Batting average 26th (last in the American League)
On base percentage 28th (last in the American League)
Slugging percentage 24th (next to last in the American League, thank you Oakland)
Runs scored- T28th (tied with Seattle for last in the American League)
Home Runs-T24th (next to last in the American League, another round of applause for Oakland)
OPS-26th (next to last in the American League, Oakland again)
BB-28th (next to last in the American League, thank you Seattle)
Fielding Percentage-27th (.001 ahead of Seattle to stay out of the American League cellar)
Errors-26th (next to last in the American League, ahead of only Seattle)
Blown Saves-T4th (remember you want to be 30th in this category-tied with Detroit for most in the American League)
Save percentage-T29th (tied with Toronto for worst in the American League)
Run Support-28th (ahead of only Seattle in the American League)
and saving the best for last,
Wins-T29th (last in the American League)

I feel for Royal fans. It's not the player development, it's not lack of $$, it's shit ownership that keeps them down.
That said, my Yankees are killin' it. I just hope they are still hot when Boston comes to town. If they split the series w/the Sox, then I think they will sail to a division title.
On a side note, I think the Phillies are going to cruise to another World Series appearance with Cliff Lee. That was a great trade because they got a legit ace, and didn't have to give up any of their top 3 prospects.

The Cardinals have taken the first three of a 4-game series from the Dodgers and are in first place by 1/2 game over the Cubs. There is cause for optimism with their recent acquisitions that give them some more pop in the lineup. We'll see how it goes.

Are you kidding? The days he pitches are the only games the Royals can draw any kind of crowd at all. If Greinke were traded the scene at Kaufmann Stadium would make the windmill scene in Frankenstein look like a baby shower.

The stadium is empty, because the owners suck. Yankees were shit in the late 80's early 90's talking about moving the team to Jersey because the Bronx was so horrible the fans wouldn't show up. Stienbrenner gets suspended and old, next thing you know they are winning, filling up the stadium, and building a new one next door.
Look at KC isn't Pittsburgh, where High School football was out drawing the Pirates in the Bonds/Bonilla hey day. KC has a cheap owner that was taking revenue sharing checks from the Yankees and giving executives bonuses, instead of investing in player development. Watch in a couople years when Grienke is nearing free agency, they will trade him for a bag of balls. They may trade him when he gets $15mill in arbitration. Its f'd up, but you MLB isn't going to force a sale of the team. They are more likely to let the guy move the team, so he can ruin another market.
Oh, KC usually draws a ton of fans when the Yankees play there. Everybody loves hating on the Yankees.

Like I said, its not a travesty that they trade off their stars. It is pathetic that the prospects they get are garbage. The Twins have just as little money as KC, and were considered for contraction, but they seem to compete almost every year. The key is player development and smart trades (players they got for Santana are too young to judge yet).

The Pirates are on course for their 17th consecutive losing season, which would be a record-breaker (breaking the Phillies' stretch of 1933-1948).
Immediately before that, the Pirates were a power what with a young Bonds, Bonilla, and their ace, Doug Drabek.
So, when you suffer about your team sucking this year (e.g. my Athletics were sub-500 before the All-Star break for the first time since 1999) just thank God you're not a Pirates fan.
And to show that God is both vengeful and merciful, the Phillies look REALLY good what with a murder's row batting order and a multitude of starting pitchers (hello Cliff Lee and Pedro Martinez.)

Just in case you missed it, Oakland's Rickey Henderson's Hall of Fame acceptance speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeTOtIwOi0oIf you're going to do an All-Time American League v. National League team, Rickey would have to be in left field, and leading off (#1 in runs). Racist Ty Cobb would hit second (center field, career batting average = .366, #2 in runs), fucking Ted Williams would hit third (right field), Babe Ruth at cleanup (DH, hits for power), Lou Gehrig, fifth (1B), Cal Ripkin sixth (SS), Eddie Collins seventh (2B, http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=collied01), Yogi Berra eighth (cacther), Wade Boggs (Third base, 9th). Starting Rotation: Whitey Ford, Walter Johnson, Bob Feller, Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue Middle Relief: Rollie Fingers, Luis Tiant, Lefty Gomez. Closers: Mariano Rivera, Dennis Eckersley. Bench: Ivan Rodriguez (Yogi's backup), Reggie Jackson (pinch hitter), Joe DiMaggio (4th outfielder),"Jimmie" Foxx (terror), George Brett, Harmon Killebrew (pure slugger), Micky Mantle (Superman with a drinking problem).

Ty Cobb, LF (.367, terrorist on basepaths, good glove) Tris Speaker, CF (best defensive CF ever, most doubles, .345) Babe Ruth, RF (Could do it all) Lou Gehrig, 1B (RBI machine) Napoleon Lajoie, 2B (They named the team after him, .338) Luke Appling, SS (.310, great defense, long HOF career) Mickey Cochrane, C (.320, long considered the best) Brooks Robinson, 3B (For defense obviously, but he drove in runs) Pitchers bat in real baseball.
Bill Dickey (Taught Berra) Ivan Rodriguez (Maybe over Cochrane?)
Jimmie Foxx (Right-handed Ruth pinch hits and plays some 3B here) Lou Boudreau (Leader, clutch) Eddie Collins (Smart, good glove, good backup infielder here) Ted Williams (Left handed bat off the bench) Micky Mantle (If he had two good knees, and cut down his swing, ...)
Walter Johnson (greatest of all time) Lefty Grove (31-4, smoking fastball, battled Johnson) Cy Young (Dominated the league first 3-4 seasons it existed) Bob Feller (Personal favorite gets here on merit, too) Early Wynn (Won 300, great competitor)
Dennis Eckersley (Yes, another personal favorite who merits being here) Rollie Fingers (Classic reliever) Rube Waddell (Long relief when present and sober) Waite Hoyt (Personal favorite, clutch, see '21 Series) Sam McDowell (Smoke from the left side to set up the closers)

A.L. C-Carlton Fisk 1B-Lou Gehrig 2B-Eddie Collins (better defensively and more of a threat on the basepath than Lajoie) 3B-George Brett SS-Cal Ripken Jr. (it's close between him and Yount but Yount gives you more versality off the bench because he can play outfield too) LF-Ted Williams CF-Ken Griffey Jr.r (considering the range of the rest of the outfield you are going a gold glove in centerfield) RF-Babe Ruth
SP-Walter Johnson, Bob Feller, Roger Clemons, Lefty Grove, and Randy Johnson RP-Dennis Eckersley, Mariano Rivera, Rollie Fingers, and Dan Quisenberry
Reserves-Bill Dickey, Jimmie Foxx, Nap Lajoie, Rod Carew, Robin Yount, Brooks Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Ty Cobb(would like to start him somewhere but I can't take out Williams or Ruth and he wasn't a good enough defensive centerfielder to put in over Griffey Jr., have to have one outfielder with a glove out there), and Tris Speaker
Arms in the farm system-Jim Palmer, Whitey Ford, Eddie Plank, Ted Lyons, and Catfish Hunter
N.L.
C-Johnny Bench 1B-Stan Musial 2B-Roger Hornsby SS-Honus Wagner 3B-Mike Schmidt LF-Barry Bonds CF-Willie Mays RF-Hank Aaron
SP-Sandy Koufax, Steve Carlton, Christy Matthewson, Grover Cleveland Alexander, and Greg Maddox
RP-Bruce Sutter, Trevor Hoffman, Tug McGraw, and John Smoltz
Reserves-Roy Campanella, Pete Rose(not enough power or speed to put in the starting line up would make a great pinch hitter plus he can fill in at 2B, 3B, 1B, or LF), Joe Morgan, Pee Wee Reese, Eddie Matthews, Roberto Clemente, Mel Ott, and Edd Roush
Arms in the farm system-Juan Marichal, Carl Hubbell, Bob Gibson, Three Finger Brown, Robin Roberts, Warren Spahn, Tom Glavine and Tom Seaver
Players left off because I couldn't decide which league to put them in
Frank Robinson, Dave Winfield, Lee Smith, and Gaylord Perry

Bob Gibson deserves to be more than an arm in the farm system. The guy had a 1.12 ERA in '68. Those were the days when starters typically went eight or nine innings even if they threw 150 pitches.

There are a lot of them that deserve to be off the farm system but what do you want me to do, have a ten man starting rotation? To move him up I would have to move one of the others down. I'm also not going to downgrade anyone for performance enhancing drugs because there were players in the 19th century who were shooting themselves up with monkey testosterone to try to get an edge on the competition. It's been around long before Balco.

Bob Gibson >> Steve Carlton.
Remember that Gibson's 1968 year mandated that the pitcher's mound be trimmed to compensate...
Having Koufax and Gibson as 1,2 would be quite intimidating to any and all AL All-Time batters.
Here's Gibson's 1968 stats. Note how he pitched all 9 innings of 3 out of 7 games in the World Series!
Given his penchant for aggressive/head hunting, the first AB between him and hunched-over Rickey Henderson in the All-Time Game would be quite interesting...
If Gibson beaned Rickey as a warning shot, would Ty Cobb lead the charge of the AL storming out from the dugout??

Also tried to present a convincing argument for having Pete Rose start over Schmidt at 3B.
Was undone by Rose's OBP which was not only less than Schmidt's (given a much higher starting point BA) but was evidence of a free-swinger.
Therefore, Pete Rose is on the bench as a pinch hitter/utility man.

K-Rod just gave up 5 runs in the bottom of the ninth without getting an out against the Padres.
That pretty much sums up the Mets' year.

The only game the Royals have won in the last week was Bruce Chen's first major league win in four years. In that game the Royals started Mark Teahan at 1B, Alberto Callaspo at 3B and had Brayan Pena batting cleanup. Not to mention that three and a half weeks ago they traded for Ryan Freel. A couple of days ago they designated him for assignment. WTF?

A-Hole got his first clutch hit, in a big spot, in his major league career against the Sox. I still wish he got the HIV from Madonna. Anyway, 14 innings of duelling shutouts was tremendous. I feel bad for Burnett. 7+ innings of one hit ball and he only pitched half the game, and didn't get a win.
I'm glad Wakfield isn't back yet. When his knuckler is working, the Yanks look like fools out there. As much as I hate the Sox, I love Wakefield. I was really hoping he would get to 20 wins this season, before he got hurt.
Also, good luck in retirement John Smoltz. I always hated the Braves, but had to respect their Big Three pitchers. It would be nice for the 3 of them to go into the Hall together. Smoltz is probably not as much a "first ballot" guy as the other 2, but if I had to win a game to save my life, I give him the ball over Glavine and Maddux.

I'm watching the Hall of Fame inductions right now. I'm not sure what is going to take longer, the entire first round of the NFL Draft or six induction speechs. This thing has been on for two and a half hours now and Derrick Thomas and Bruce Smith have not been inducted yet.

Another reason why baseball is better.
The recent three Baseball HOF speeches averaged 15 minutes each.
