The earliest humans, who lived in Africa, were homogeneous. As man spread across the globe, racial traits/differences developed to help those living under different circumstances better deal with their own environment. For example, the dark pigment in Africans' skin helped them survive under hot/sunny conditions. The light skin of Europeans allows for greater penetration of the sun's UV radiation/vitamin D (which is harder to come by in colder/higher latitudes).
