Specter is doing this only to hold on to his seat. It really isn't a matter of principle. He would have been trounced in the GOP primary and saw that the Dems had nobody of any significance to run against Republican Toomey.

At least Specter won't rubber-stamp Dem judiciary nominees. Remember his abuse of Anita Hill and his support of Alito and Roberts?

I wonder what the powers that be thought would happen as "Boss Limbaugh," et.al. kept pushing Toomey and kept striving for Arlen's ouster. Guess their little plot backfired. Now they are stuck with a candidate that doesn't stand a chance in Hell in the general election against Arlen. As PA is a closed primary state, Toomey would easily beat Arlen in the primary thanks to the less educated members of my race (white people who can't think for themselves and only repeat talking points...though they can not articulate anything that would resemble the ability to understand what they are saying....much less back it up)that reside in the "Alabama" section of Pennsylvania (there is a little joke....that is all too close to reality that Pennsylvania is Pittsburgh in the east, Philadelphia in the East, and Alabama in the middle.....I don't think I have to spell it out any more than that). However, in the General Election Arlen should do quite well in the areas of PA where people actually live (Pitt. and Phil.) & Toomey, Boss Limbaugh, and the GOP will be left to pound sand (I do not believe the Democrats had a viable candidate that had announced his/her candidacy prior to Arlen switching over. Gotta love it when failed DJs (Limbaugh, Beck, et.al.) show their skills!

WTF was it so important for him to be committee chairman if he disagreed with the shit he voted for. As a an elected rep of the people, he's supposed to put the country's best interests first (the country's best interests in his honest judgement). It's not supposed to be all about him or his career. He only called himself a Repub all those years because it made it easier for him to be elected in Penn. He's more of a whore than Houston after she filmed her 500 man gangbang.

This the hallmark of the American Political system today. The difference between the home town representative politicians of the past, who thought of their constituents first, and the professional politician class we have today that think of themselves first, their parties second, and only then the people who voted for them.

Except that Specter is a senator and not a representative. The entire population of the state are his constituents.

Representatives, at least the ones in the House have districts. Whatever district you live in that is your representative. Senators represent the entire state not just whatever little funny shaped notch Congress has drawn out on their political Etch-a-Sketch. If your interests correspond with the state's interests then your Senators may be representatives but if they differ, say you own a rural farm in a primarily industrialized urban state for example then your senators may not be representing you at all.

Specter is going to be a problem for whatever party he's with. He started out a democrat, and when he was about to lose a race in Philly years ago, he switched to the Repubs. When he was about to lose the current race challenge, he switched back to the Dems. In his last Senate race he was campaigning in a section of PA and told the crowd that he often came to that town to visit his dear friends Mr & Mrs. Joebagadonuts, except the couple had been deceased for over a dozen years. That remark got played over and over again on local TV. He's old, he's senile and he's no real help for either party.

The odd and somewhat disturbing thing about him is that he looks younger and healthier with cancer than he did before cancer.

Remember that other piece of shit who switched parties: Winston Churchill? Much hated by conservatives everywhere.

Check out this shit. After Sen Jim Jeffords changed parties in 2001, Specter got his panties in a bunch and proposed a rule to prevent party switching.
