The Saturn V first stage used RP-1, which is essentially JP-1. The Shuttle probably should have done likewise - Hydrogen sucks as a fuel when you have warm surroundings.
The Shuttle is a true glider on landings. The RCS thrusters fire some as it comes in, but that's only to keep the attitude correct - there's no thrust along the line of flight.
