There was a famous story about a University several years ago that wanted to develop a voluntary genetic database similar to what is available in several European countries. Many countries that have universal health care allow doctors to use the data for research purposes.

Unfortunately, the University had a great response from the people seeking medical assistance at it's hospital; however, it was forced to drop the idea of developing a genome database of it's patients when somewhere between 1 in 6 and 1 and 8 children whose mothers were in "stable" marriages found out that their husband was not the father of the child. After being involved in several lawsuits, the University dropped the whole program on advice of its legal counsel.
