I have wondered about this myself, often.

It's not much, but this is what I can offer:

1. Years ago, the elderly looked at us and probably thought the same thing. "Rebel without cause"? Stuff like that repeats itself every decade or so.

2. Most (not all) of these people manage to land on their own two feet and build some kind of existence for themselves. It might not be the kind of existence you or me would choose, but nevertheless, it resembles something we can relate to.
