Censorship hasn't failed: we already have Federal obscenity law in the U.S. despite the First Amendment (three-part definition). As far as I can tell, the government mostly uses it sparingly to have a moderating effect on the porn industry. It seems to work remarkably well for that, although it could potentially be abused to shut down commercial porn entirely.

That said, I don't approve of the concept of obscenity, but I can see where its supporters are coming from. Some kinds of porn are rather indefensible.
