An ugly person definitely has better chances of beating the odds if they have one or more compensating qualities (like wealth, talent, wicked smarts, social status ETC). But the type of studies I was referring to account for these things in their methodology. The results speak to the effect of appearance when all other things are equal (level of education, range of intelligence, background ETC).
