The chase began with a stolen plane from a Canadian flight school, meandered through three states with U.S. fighter jets hot on the trail and forced the evacuation of the state capitol in Wisconsin.

It ended about seven hours later, in a Midwestern town of 360 people, inside a general store off a narrow, dirt road with the suspect sipping on a Gatorade, waiting to be cuffed.

"He just came in, got a Gatorade, tried to get a beef jerky, didn't have enough money, went over and sat down and just kind of watched people come and go," said Tammy Bailey of Simmons Grocery & Hardware in Ellsinore in southern Missouri.

That is where authorities say they eventually caught up with Adam Leon, 31, after his 783-mile journey in the stolen Cessna 172 aircraft on Monday.

The plane was reported taken from a flight school in Thunder Bay, Ontario, about 3 p.m. by a pilot identified as a student at the school, said Laura Brown of the Federal Aviation Administration.

It flew over Lake Superior less than half an hour later.

F-16 fighter jets, which intercepted the plane near Michigan's Upper Peninsula border with Wisconsin, tried repeatedly to draw the pilot's attention.

At one point, the pilot appeared to acknowledge that he saw the other planes, said Mike Kucharek, a spokesman with the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

"He looked at them," Kucharek said.

But the man did not communicate with either NORAD or with the FAA, officials said.

Instead, the plane flew "erratically" over the course of the afternoon, Kucharek said -- sometimes reaching 14,000 feet in altitude, then dropping as low as 3,000 feet.

"We don't want to suppose the motive of the individual," Kucharek said. "But it certainly made a day for the professional pilots that were flying these missions and a very serious situation from a NORAD perspective."

In the midst of the pursuit, Wisconsin evacuated its state capitol in Madison for less than an hour as a precaution.

The Wisconsin National Guard deployed two F-16s of its own to try and get the pilot to establish communications with FAA air traffic controllers.

Eventually, the man landed the four-seater plane on a road in southern Missouri, parking it under what appeared to be a bridge or culvert -- apparently to hide it, said a federal law enforcement source said.

The plane -- which had been fully fueled, giving it about seven hours of flying time -- was down to roughly 30 minutes of fuel, said Lt. Cmdr Gary Ross of NORAD.

The pilot ran from the scene, prompting a brief manhunt.

The search led authorities to Simmons Grocery & Hardware, where they found their suspect.

"They walked over and asked him a few questions," said Bailey, the store employee. "The guy stood up, turned around. They handcuffed him, stood there, talked to him a little bit and took him off."

This country was lacking for a good plane chase. At least they didn't shoot him down- considering the stuff I read post 9/11 that's encouraging.

I read somewhere else that he was hoping to be shot down. Still two F16 tails had to be very expensive, I was wondering if we could charge the Canadian government for the fuel costs. They are the ones that let him get away.

I'm glad they let the guy land instead of blowing him up.

This never would have happened if we'd have let the US build that 14,000 foot high border fence ...

What ever happened to people committing suicide by pulling a gun on a cop? We're most likely going to return him to Canada. I can't think of any jurisdictional problem that would prevent it. A little help with the costs of chasing your fugitive down for you would be nice and neighborly though.

How does an F-16 "tail" a Cessna without stalling???

I'm calling BS on this one. Maybe if the Cessna is in a maximum-speed dive can the F-16s fly next to it at a similar speed, long enough to get a glance in the cockpit, But at cruise, even full power, no way.

jrv, an f16 can almost flight vertically. They have the power to virtually eliminate a stall speed. I've no doubt they made some speed matched passes next to this airplane.

You are right that there is no way in the world that the F-16 can fly the same speed as a Cessna 172. I guess that the spokesman may have been oversimplifying what was going on.

Even when going vertical an F-16 needs a lot of airflow over the control surfaces or the stick becomes useless. And in vertical flight it's the engine counteracting gravity, not the wings - different problem.

In level horizontal flight the F-16 needs enough lift to balance gravity. The slower it goes the less lift. You can angle the nose up (AOA) to get more lift at a given airspeed, but at a high enough AOA airflow over the top of the wing is disrupted and the plane adopts brick-aerodynamics. An f-16's AOA limit is 25 degrees in this case.

The best the pilots can do is extend landing gear and flaps (to increase drag) which lets then run the engines at a little more power, with maximum AOA (nose a bit up, engines pointed a little down, meaning a little extra lift, meaning airspeed can be a little slower).

As best I can tell the F-16's can't do it. In normal flight their minimum airspeed is about 100 mph faster than the Cessna's maximum airspeed. With landing gear out etc and max AOA I think they're still 20+ mph faster. And this assumes the Cessna is at full throttle - if the Cessna slows down it's hopeless.

It's like some of the problems the Soviets had when Mathias Rust flew his Cessna to Red Square during the Cold War - their interceptor jets simply couldn't slow enough to get a good look at him.

I'm betting the F-16's were flying ascending/descending circles around the Cessna just to stay with it, but were not able to match speeds well enough to see what the Cessna dude was looking at.

PS. If a Cessna is in a maximum speed dive then an f-16 _might_ be able to hold position next to it, until the Cessna runs out of altitude.

That was my first thought too, they were literally flying circles around him. And given the temperament of an Air Guard pilot on a foreign hostile in a Cessna I'm sure they cut it pretty close.
