Haven't used a landline in years. When I had a house, they required it because of being connected to the guard shack at security entrance or whatev.

I have both but I dread answering my house phone. The only people who call are telemarketers and bill collectors for my old roommate.

Cell.
I don't see the point in landlines anymore. Hasn't it even been cheaper to go mobile for a while?
And I BS'ed at my old place, regarding the security entrance, and just gave them my cell number. Though occasionally I'd get a call from someone outside of my place while I was out.

Landline here. I hate cell phones and the relationships most people have with them.

Land line. I hate being tethered to an electronic leash.
Here's a tip the cooler you think you are when you are on your cell phone the lamer you actually look when you are on your cell phone.

The problem with cell phones is that E911 is difficult in some places and is still a challenge. That is, if you call 911 from a cellphone and are unable to give your location, the EMS boys can't always find you. Landline they can. I'll keep both until E911 bugs are all fixed.

I don't think it's an issue of having to call 911 frequently so much as when you do have to call you want them to be able to locate you.

People who speak on their cell phones whilst driving are a hazard. It's probably dangerous to brush your teeth whilst driving and certainly rude to do so at a crowded restaurant or on a bus. That's not a reason to avoid buying a toothbrush. There is no obligation to place or take a call, particularly if you think it would be unsafe. I use a handsfree device.

I still have a land line as my primary phone, but I work from the house. I do not use my cell, but I have one I can load some minutes on should the need arise.

It's a sweetly anachronistic position, hearkening back to the early 1990s when people who had cell phones were 'Yuppies'.
Ask the rice farmer in Cambodia or Laos, who can own a telephone for the first time because cell phone infrastructure is so much cheaper and more advanced than a landline, if they aren't afraid someone will think they're rude for taking a call in a restaurant.
For most applications cell phones are far superior, portable and multitask (Smart phones!) It's just not reasonable to say otherwise.
To be honest, I don't know his exact reason for not owning a cellphone and his dislike for the people that do. I know for certain he has said he'll never get one. He even voted for Cynthia McKinney who didn't have a chance. Also, he lives in New York, but he uses this soap that (if I remember correctly) is only sold in Seattle, so he has to have it imported. And this isn't because this soap is great or special in anyway, he just does it because he likes that the soap has this really long winded rant written on the label and is independently owned by some old guy whose probably insane.

how long has your old roommate been gone? I still get calls for the people who had my landline number before I did, and I've had the same number for 8 years.
Well, I threw her shit out on the sidewalk about 2 1/2 years ago. Half the time it's a telephone robot and I can't tell them she's moved out. 8 years with people calling for the previous owners is pretty ridiculous though. It would get on my nerves.
Oh, and by the way "1 800 do not call" only adds more telemarketing calls.

Fuck fuck fuck. I just got a call from the owner of the building explaining that I was going to have to start to carrying a cell phone when I am working.
At least it's provided for me and I don't have to worry about paying for it. Just another number I don't have any real reason to learn.

It is great. But kind of bizarre.
Here's what happened.
This Cuban guy I worked with named Jean. He lived with his mother and had a kind of arrangement where his house was paid for but he worked full time. He lived with his mother.
About 3 weeks ago Jean told us (that is the super and I) that he would be taking his mother to the airport to visit Cuba and would be back by noon.
We have no idea what happened to him.
And now I do his job except I get paid and rent my place because I prefer my freedom.
The police have been called, but they seem to respect an adult's right to disappear.
The dude left his car unlocked in one of the garages and the inside of his apartment looks like they just stepped out for lunch.
I threw spoiled food from the fridge away today.

That's pretty odd. And interesting. If the guy turns up let us know what the story was.

It get's weirder.
Since he left I have discovered from checking his mail box that he goes by at least 3 names.
Jean-Pierre Lopez Gomez and several iterations thereof.
The last I knew some of the Cuban folks in the building were putting an announcement about him over Cuban radio.
He has a daughter in Miami.
Jean search your name. I'm wondering what happened.

I told Conq. that he needed to start a blog weeks ago. He's like the Lunch Thread on five shots of Cuervo.

Haha, Yeah. But instead of looking for him we're just looking for someone who wants to rent a furnished apartment.

I haven't had a land line for 8 years and don't think I'd ever go back. With an unlimited plan it's cost efficient and meets all of my needs.
The biggest drawback I've found with cell phones is that I don't remember anybody's phone number anymore. Back in the day I would have all of my friends and family's numbers memorized so no matter what happened I could call them. If I were to lose my phone while I was out and needed to call a friend I only have 1 or 2 numbers I could recall from memory.
