By the way, I still can't fucking stand him ! He snubbed me and a bunch of other kids when I was 12. He was leaving the stadium and walked right through us like we didn't exist; all of us with out little outstretched hands holding notepads and baseballs wanting an autograph. He was and always will be a prick in my book. I loved his crying and whining when Gene Garber kept him from Dimaggio's record.

I hesitate to say baseball rules, but it sure has its place. I can't think of any other sport that captivates a kid like baseball does. Every at bat is going over the fence, every fielded ball is going into a double play, etc. Football tends to smack a kid upside the head and bring them to a reality early on as to their future in the sport.

This is true ! while football and basketball are certainly pretty brainy in their own way they are also very physical. Baseball is of course physical but is a real thinking man's game. Something going on with every move. It can be enjoyed on a much simpler level too. A cold beer and a hot dog, sunny day at the park, good pitching matchup, babes in shorts and bikini tops and just watching the play by play without doing any thinking. It's got it all !

Been a long time since I checked out his stats, but damn that guy never got hurt. All those years playing on turf too. Its a shame he's too much of an asshole to be in the Hall of Fame. The All Time Leaders in Hits and Home Runs, won't be enshrined because they are both filth.
Since I was thinking Hall of Fame, Jim Rice doesn't deserve to be in. If I were picking a team from the era, I'd take Dale Murphy over him any day. Murphy didn't play with the same caliber players as Rice, to be producing as many runs; but Murphy has all those Gold Glove in center field, with that power. Back to back MVP's. He also played every game, no DHing when he was too hung over to take the field.

No. You are missing a key perspective in the case of these 2 players.
From 1975 thru 1986, Jim Ed (Rice) was probably the American League's, if not ALL of MLB's, Dominant Offensive force....Rice literally impacted the way the opposition played and pitched against the entire red Sox team during that time period. And this is something the Hall Of fame voters seriously consider when looking at an individual player: They typically want or need to see a 10 year period where the guy was one of the best, if not THE best player year in and year out. 10 years is the minimum...
No One combined Power, Average and Run Production BETTER than Jim Rice during that period, no one. Not even Mike Schmidt, and certainly not Dale Murphy. Murphy was indeed a great fielder with a HUGE arm, and that is worth something, but not since Brooks Robinson has a player gotten into the Hall primarily for his defensive skills. Murphy actually had several seasons where he was a 30-30 (HR - Steals) member, so he DWARFED Rice in terms of speed, but big deal....Murphy was NOT a speed demon by any stretch. Murphy just wasnt the DOMINATING force that Rice was for so long a period.

I don't know. Rice's run production was helped by Yaz and then Boggs, and wasn't Carney Lansford on some of those Red Sox teams (I'd take Yaz or Boggs over Rice any day). The best player I can think of that played with Murphy is Bob Horner. Murphy had power too, I don't want to look up the stats again, but I believe he had more 30 HR seasons than Rice.
Trying hard to shoot down your 75-86 argument, I give you George Brett. It was tough to come up with a name though. Plenty of guys were ending dominance or beginning during that period. Rice really only had Hall of Fame years 4 times (77-79,83).
Simplest way I can put it: I try and slot good players into 3 categories, HOF, perennial All-Star, & occasional All Star. Occasional All Star's are guys like Chili Davis, Harold Baines, Jeffery Leonard. I rate Jim Rice a notch above them, but not HOF. He slots in with Andre Dawson, Keith Hernandez, Don Mattingly, players that were great, but not HOF players.
All of this said, Jim Rice is in and he isn't near the head of the line to be thrown out. He's just standing next to Dave Winfield talking about how much $$ they'd have made if they had the Juice.
P.S. The only questionable guy that I think should be in is Blyleven. If the guy played on mediocre teams instead of horrible teams, he'd have 300 wins and be in already. Case in point, Don Sutton.

If Rice hadn't broken his ankle in August of his rookie year the rest of the nation wouldn't have been subjected to every sports media outlet doing Aurora Snow impersonations in Fenway Park in 2004.

What is it about baseball that brings out the purest form of asshole? Between Ty Cobb, Pete Rose and Barry Bonds, no other sport has such a wide fucking array of pricks.
Jesus, one of the best pitchers of all time, Bob Gibson, was so goddamn mean he makes Lou look like Mr. Rogers.
Say what you want about other sports, but Baseball sets the gold standard for motherfuckers.

I think football has had its fair share of miserable pricks too. LT was a mean crackhead. The 90's Cowboys had a house to hold hooker and drug parties. There are assholes in every sport.
And what did Ty Cobb do so bad??? Jump in the stands and stomp a handicapped guy?? The guy shouldn't have been running his mouth, if he couldn't handle the consequences.
