My most important and scary political idea is that things take on a life of their own. Shit will get out of hand, so when you start some shit, make sure it's good shit. Wars almost never go as planned (Vietnam, Iraq). All these do good agencies us liberals set up eventually wind up spending inefficient amounts of money and time justifying their existence, and can never be killed. Even programs that are good to most, like Social Security, take on a life of their own and can't be killed. I see it all the time as a defense industry worker. The only time I've seen this violated in the defense industry is when a life long Green Beret got 3 stars and killed the Comanche helicopter, at least that's how I heard it. He said he wanted a "clean kill" and by God, he got it.
Nuclear weapons? Life of their own.
Preachers getting into politics? Life of its own.
But it's not just Government! Deregulate the airlines? They took on a life of their own. How's that working out? Less environmental regulation and enforcement, and business will take care of itself? Took on a life of its own.
Immigration debate? Never be settled, it took on a life of its own, and now it's impossible to do anything, because of political logjams. That's not what anyone intended, but the issue took on a life of its own.
Abortion? Ain't nothing gonna change.
Throat fucking? Life of its own.
How'd that slave idea work out? Took on a life of its own, didn't it?
I don't know if this gives ammunition to conservatives or progressives. It's no doubt going to take on a life of its own.
At least I gave good example of the proper use of its and it's.

You are finally starting to figure out part of why government sucks.

Private industry is often no better than government. But the thing is, it just seems to me Liberals often feel they have no other power as important as their vote. All those big politicians all over TV begging them to vote for them, it makes the Liberal feel empowered. But the thing is, you get to vote for one guy who's in charge of way too much. If you go down to the Social Security office and they screw up your retirement check, what you gonna do? Vote for somebody else? What's that gonna change?
The reason private industry is better is because individual businesses are more easily killed. I read an article back in high school that Michael Stipe wrote for Spin Magazine that was about what he called, "consumer advocacy". To this day I do things like at small locally owned restaurants, I pay in cash so they don't have to pay taxes if they don't want. To bigger things like being tired of AT&T and their hidden charges, so I wrote an article for a web site explaining how to easily use Google Voice and a SIP account to get free talk minutes on your mobile phone that I know a lot of people used. You have more power over private industry, that's the only reason it's better.
