Precedent?

1) China was the most populous nation on Earth. North Korea is a tiny poor gangster regime. The US gov't has interacted with the Norks and been burned by their lies many times before in recent years (including when Clinton himself sent Sec of State Albright there). This was not an opening of "detante". It was negotiating with and rewarding hostage takers.

2) Kissinger is not an ex-Pres. He was not Sec of State when he first went to China or even the spouse of a Sec of State. He was National Security Advisor. Also, when he first went to China, it was in secret. There weren't humiliating pics and headlines for America all over the world.
