Chico, I will not admit to how many hours I waited in line to see the first Star Wars.

The mania was much worse for the first one because there hadn't been any remotely good SF since 2001 - which was and is too much for most people - and because Star Wars had no crass commercialism (no cute made-for-teddy-bear aliens).
