That whole region is fiercely independent. They deeply resent outsiders trying to manipulate things. My enemy's enemy is my friend. And, a friend of mine has a t-shirt with "Infidel" written on it in Farsi.

Iraq was entirely different. A nationally acknowledged sociopath had been running that country for a couple of decades. As for that aspect of the whole Iraqi/US issues, Iraq had already acknowledged they couldn't do it themselves.
