I think you hit the whore on the head here (). Given that there is no 'plan' and they are losing money, giving the auto makers a bunch of cash is only daring them to lose more, and faster.

It may not be new, but I did hear someone this morning urging the gov't to offer cash incentives to purchasers which would at least get the inventory moving again. People will buy American cars if the price points are low enough.
