The Mayan calendar will just start a new 10K year cycle and the word apocalypse just means "a revelation at the end of an eon, or age". The fact that it occurs on the Winter Solstice (the day that the Sun is reborn for Pagans) just has me wondering what will happen on that historic day. Certainly not the end of the world, but maybe the end of the world as we know it. Which doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. The Mayan calendar uses a cycle within a cycle within a cycle (kind of like meshed gears) and only the first one is based on the 29 day lunar phase. So, yeah, creepy.
