Quote:
(CNN) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Wednesday he had ordered the nationalization of at least some of the operations of the U.S.-based food giant Cargill and threatened to do the same with the Caracas-based food maker Polar.
"Begin the expropriation process with Cargill," he said in a nationally televised speech in which he accused the company of growing specialized forms of rice in an attempt to evade price controls.
The leftist president called the company's practices "a flagrant violation of everything that we have been doing."
Mark Klein, a spokesman for Cargill, said the Minneapolis, Minnesota-based company "is committed to the production of food in Venezuela that complies with all laws and regulations."
He said a rice mill cited by Chavez "was designed exclusively to manufacture parboiled rice, which the company has done at this site for the last seven years and elsewhere in the country for 13 years."
Klein added, "Cargill expects the opportunity to clarify the situation with the government and is respectful of the Venezuelan government decision."
Cargill, which is privately owned, has been doing business since 1986 in Venezuela, where its operations include oilseed processing, grain and oilseeds trading, animal feed, salt, and financial and risk management.
It has 2,000 employees in 22 locations in Venezuela, according to its Web site.
About Polar, which is led by Lorenzo Mendoza, Chavez said, "We can expropriate all the plants of Polar. Mr. Mendoza, be alert. Because then you will go out and order your pricey lawyers and I don't know what to say that this is a violation of the constitution. Well, fine. If you want to fight with the government, brother, there you go. It's not with the government, it's with the law!"
In August, Chavez also ordered the nationalization of the Banco de Venezuela "to put it at the service of Venezuela."

So my question is what will/should be BO's reponse if this goes through partially or completely, or is it not worth any notice at all?

It will be interesting to see how Hugo Mugabe's negotiations go with oil industry contractors in the future, especially the ones he's already behind on payments.

I think we should nationalize all of CITGO's US holdings as an appropriate response.

Chavez is one of the true nuts in power that somehow keeps getting elected. They just had elections where he won the ability to run for office forever. He shuts down newspapers and tv stations that support opposing parties, he takes over companies against their will and he picks fights with his neighbors and America. Right now he's just a nuisance to the US but eventually he might become a problem. With all the other shit that's going on, we'll probably do nothing. And as much as that sucks, we have bigger fish to fry.
I'll never understand why Sean Penn and some other liberals don't see the guy as a tyrant. He limits free speech and human rights, so why would Sean Penn like the guy? It makes no sense.

Obvious difference is the bank bailouts, auto bailouts etc. are because they are coming hat in hand to Washington begging for money. Chavez is walking in with armed goons and telling people they work for the government now. You won't find Democrats supporting that.
And if Obama announced he was shutting down Fox News and the Wall Street Journal you might have support from the super far left but the mainstream liberals would freak out.
It's not the same. I think reasonable people can see that.

If our government hadn't attempted, AND FAILED, at one or two coups to get him out of office, then he wouldn't be as firmly entrenched. He was getting the Anti-Bush vote when Barrack was still a community activist. Any how, he uses oil profits to expand infrastructure and for better education. Would our country be a better place if ExxonMobil's 4 billion a quarter helped roads and education?

You're not helping dude. He essentially did a hostile takeover of the oil companies as well as many other industries. He kicked out foreign companies, restricted trade and jailed dissenters. He is not an example of how to do things. He is a warning of what to look out for.
His claims of helping the poor are just lip service. Healthcare and education have seen virtually no money. His housing projects have been abandoned by the contractors because they weren't being paid.
There is no reason for anybody to support Chavez. He is popular in his own country largely because he controls the media and does not allow real debate. He hosts a weekly program where he speaks for hours and bullies government officials and businessmen to follow his orders or face public scorn.
You need to do better research on the guy before you support him.

Fuck, can we pull some national guard from Iraq and have them storm an oil companies offices and refineries? As soon as they come up with a car that runs on jizz, we are going to inherit the carcass of the oil industry, much like the financials and Detroit. Have President Obama take a couple boys out of sleeping bags in Afghanistan and send them do security at the governments new refineries. Then you could take the taxes off gas, since the government makes the $$ anyway.
