Meh. Even without the chimp attack, 'monkey' or 'chimp' has been a metaphor for some time now (eg. a million monkeys typing on a million typewriters etc.) We'll see what kind of backlash there is.

I'll take the NY Daily News, because its sport section is the best.

I'm sorrier that the cartoon makes light of the woman who had her face ripped off by that crazed fucking chimp. Chimps should be non-violent and wear overalls and ride Segways. The Post is written at a 3rd grade reading level. I doubt the editors ever connected the dots.

Wow.
The cartoonist should be fired immediately. It really stretches credulity for him to claim this is not about Obamy. It's an exact likeness!
Cartoonist or the guy that approved the toon for publishing?

Good point. The whole lot should go. That cartoon character could be Obama's twin!

Wow. Even Tritone didn't deem it as racism. That's like Moblem saying someone's still alive.

It would seem to evidence an editorial blind spot as to what is humorous and/or potentially racist.
Or just a continued obsession with monkeys.

How does racism figure into this? I only thought heads should roll because I think its inappropriate to print a drawing of Obama getting shot.

You are all misunderstanding the cartoon. It has nothing to do with that other news story about a chimp ripping a lady's face off.
This is just a realistic drawing of cops taking their frustration out on Obama. That's why everyone is so outraged.

Guys,
Let me clarify my position. I still do not believe the strip should have been published.
I don't think the artist is implying that the chimp is obama, or even a person. It is a symbol for a CONCEPT. A general statement (again, not my opinion) about the lack of skill and thoughtfulness put into the stimulus package. In a sense, "a monkey could have done it!" That's what he is saying.
HOWEVER, during the review process the editors (and to be honest the cartoonist too) SHOULD HAVE realized that regardless of the original intent, the cartoon crossed into a racial minefield. The long history of using ape references to dehumanize african americans had to be considered because President Obama is black and he is uniquely tethered to this stimulus package.
They HAD to know people would make this connection, fair or not. And the fact that they chose to ignore it, or were completely oblivious to it, demonstrates to me that there is a lack of diversity (or at least racial sensitivity) amongst the high ranks of their paper.
No way any black editor would let that cartoon fly. Even if he KNEW what the cartoonist was actually trying to say.
You're missing the point Montel. Obviously the editors knew the implications of the imagery. They also knew they had a backdoor with the whole "The chimp really represented...". The point is, they let it fly because they knew this would happen... everyone would be talking about it. And even a black editor would know the Post's readers and advertisers well enough to know that, regardless of the fallout, they ultimately had much to gain and little to lose by running it.

How dare you speak for all black people? I'm sure there is at least one black editor out there who is not an insecure, humorless wimp.
No, you're right. Its wrong of me to lump us all together. I should say, then, that any black editor who would allow this to hit the press on his watch should be ashamed of himself.
It's not really about insecurity. It's about dignity and respect for your people. It's okay to occasionally poke fun at your people if society overwhelmingly holds more POSITIVE images and sentiments about your race (as it is for Whites and Asians). But when negative stereotypes about your people are the RULE and not the exception, then it should give you pause. You don't pile on when your people have been beat down. You lift them up.

Wrong sir. Any black editor should realize that his first obligation is to his paper, and that doing his job well is the best way he can lift up "his people". He should also realize that he has no more obligation to uphold the dignity of the black race than he does the dignity of any other race. It's that sort of "your people... your race" bullshit that white supremacists like to sling. And the sad part is, they're right. If blacks, or any other race, are going to segregate themselves from the rest of humanity and proclaim their primary allegiance to "their race", then one certainly can't fault any other group for following suit. The bottom line is, the Post should do what's in the best interest of the Post, and any editor that would be willing to let his paper take a back seat to his or her personal agenda, isn't worth a good goddamn. You wanna be a social revolutionary... go be a social revolutionary. God speed. But if you wanna be a newspaper editor, a politician, a lawyer, or the squeegee guy on east 23rd [ ok, that's me ], be willing to step up, or go do something else. Any successful pw will tell you... you don't always get to fuck who you wanna fuck.
