Anyone remember the 80's TV show "CHiPs", centered around two california highway patrol motorcycle officers, "Ponch and John". When I was 11 years old, the show made total sense. Now twenty four years later, I look back and wonder what in god's name two freeway ticket givers were off doing playing detective all the time- getting fingerprints off stuff, breaking up rings of insurance fraudsters, going undercover into biker gangs, helping to evacuate a roller disco before the poison gas went off. Really, what the fuck were they thinking?

Their popped collar and perfumed off duty mode when they juggled their romantic interests and put a fresh coast of wax on the Firebird seems reasonable in retrospect, but seriously- how did the writers figure these guys should be overachieving CSI's on motorcycles?

Check out about 5:25 into this video -- comedy ensues.

The Golden Girls are untouchable. Blanche Devereaux

However I could have done without that pathetic fuck Stan Zbornak. His level of scum played a big role in my depression during my teens... I pitty him.
Also, that douchebag Myles Webber, how dare he! Poor Rose already had to deal with Charlie croaking on her mid session.

If only once I was to be on a whore's side. This is it, one time only.

Go ahead and tear The Golden Palace a new asshole, that too was one of teh many ouchies that affected my life....

What about Barney Miller? That show was on the air for about ten years and I can't recall one scene of one episode that took place anywhere besides that dinky police station. Everyone on the show was a detective and yet there was never one scene of anyone detecting anything other than the hash that Wojo's girlfriend put in the brownies.

I enjoyed Golden Palace actually. Golden Girls - Dorothy + Don Cheadle + Cheech = hilarious antics.

Same with Taxi...always in the garage. Ditto Cheers. Still good shows.

i will prolly get this on for this.. BUT i was bored at work and looking through newsgroups, and ran into the first episode of welcome back kotter.. which i LOVED when i was a kid.. so i watched it.. and i still love it.. i don't think its as cheesy as some of the BAD old shows.. like threes company.. i mean come on.. living with janet and chrissy.. someone is waking up with my balls on their forehead...

BTW.. 1st episode of kotter had james woods in it.. he had to be like 20.. its weird:)

Larry Wilcox, who played CHiP Jon Baker (the blonde one) was offered the role played by Don Johnson (Sonny Crockett) in Miami Vice. He turned it down to make some straight to video movie. Great career move. He's probably filling potholes in Bakersfield now.

My fave as a kid. The best is when Wojo is all high and talks about forgiveness being divine.

He looks at the Chief and says "Forgive me, Barn, and be divine..."

SPR, I'm gonna defer to your perspective as a female and ask you to explain the popularity of this show with young women. I had several girlfriends that listed Golden Girls among their favorite shows and, for the life of me, I never understood the affinity that a woman in her 20s could have for a bunch of horned up, menopausal old cougars. I think most men would rank listening to Bea Arthur talk about her sexlife as only marginally less entertaining than getting a prostate exam from Freddy Krueger.

The A-Team. Their causes were noble, like stopping a biker gang from terrorizing a small town, moving a rock star threatened with kidnapping into a quiet suburban neighborhood (which doesn't stay quiet for long) or helping a desperate father rescue his daughter from a fanatic religious community.

Only one problem- the team seemed unfamiliar with the concept of aiming their rifles, and only fired randomly in the direction of their enemies. Cars are flipping, explosions are going off the by minute, and thousands of rounds are flying, but never hit anyone -- just tires, radiator grills, fruit stands, and more tires. Let's face it- they only succeeded due to the incompetence of their opponents.

Strengths: Well trained; access to lots of firepower; Mr. T.; could build a tank out of basic materials like old plywood, duct tape and scuba tanks.

Weaknesses: Poor marksmanship; internal bickering; lack of focus; Mr. T; soft spot for the beautiful daughter of each episode's oppressed father- the farmer, bar owner, town mayor, etc.

Case in point: Click the Youtube pic.

Skippy was good, but the kid's name was Boner, fer chrissake.

Speaking of Chips, was Estrada gay? I was pretty young when that show was on, but I always got the feeling he was a little too fancy.

My boyfriend introduced them to me.... He wants to bang Rose Nylund.... So did my dad.... Which explains why girls who play dumb are such big part of the times... I can't say why I love them... Mind control?... Giz Jordan (typo. but too funny to fix) and other female posters like them too. They are older, so I don't know... I'm sticking with mind control... I think I may be the youngest female poster, if not the youngest out of the whole board....

In retrospect that probably saved the show. I can't see Larry Wilcox in Don Johnson's wardrobe on that show.

Larry Wilcox had a rough youth - joined the Marines and put in his time in Vietnam. That's interesting about Miami Vice though.

There's some blurring between the 70's and 80's here.

For example:

"Barney Miller is a comedy television series set in a New York City police station in Greenwich Village that ran from January 23, 1975 to May 20, 1982 on ABC."

Focusing on the 80's:

"St. Elsewhere is a U.S. drama television series that originally ran on NBC from October 26, 1982 to May 25, 1988. The series is set at St. Eligius, a decaying urban teaching hospital in Boston's South End neighborhood."

and

"Hill Street Blues is a serial police drama that was first aired on NBC in 1981 and ran for 146 episodes on primetime into 1987."

I loved St. Elsewhere back in the day. It's the only time I could watch Howie Mandel without changing the channel.

The ending of the series was genius.
