Hey, I've lived my whole life in tornado alley and have never had one come anywhere close to where I live.

Winds batter city, kill three people, damage homes and spread fires

Fierce winds wreaked havoc across the region Thursday, causing the deaths of three people, including a Long Island construction worker.

The powerful windstorm fueled a fire that destroyed nearly a dozen Queens homes, toppled a tractor-trailer in the Bronx, closed bridges, caused massive delays at area airports and shut down Aqueduct race track.

"A storm like this you only get once every few years," said meteorologist Patrick Maloit. "We often see storms with gusts around 40 mph. We had widespread gusts of 45-55 mph with some up to 60 mph. That extra 10 mph makes a big difference."
