This happens every year in Aussie. I lived in Sydney for 9 years and the bush fires would start up every Christmas. This one was bad though with a high death toll.

It doesn't help that people build houses in the bush, when bush fires and drought are a part of the natural cycle in Aussie. It's like people building houses in tornado alley and wondering why their house gets destroyed every few years.
