In theory, yeah, but Meebo is [or was last I used it] browser-based, so you can run it from places where they otherwise block non-HTTP (browser) requests. Lots of workplaces are firewalling out IM services to prevent productivity loss.

Miranda is also simple, clean, and works well for multiple IM services on Windows machines.

Adium is nice on the Mac, especially with the Growl plugin installed.
