The vet told me he probably had a seizure and died from the resulting complications.
When I got him to the ER he wasn't moving and his eyes were closed. His heart was still beating so I thought it was worth a try.
Since he was otherwise healthy it was probably some inherent problem.

aww, Conq, that's terrible. I'm so sorry to hear this. When I was 4, I had a hammy named Andre, I woke up one day and he was in his cage, dead, he wasn't bloody. He was disheveled. I suspect my dirtbag oldest brother might have killed it. My mom had birds so I think he put the birds in Andre's cage and he had a heart attack or he suffocated him. Well he's definetely serving his time for this, he works in the security industry, a narc basically,he has 5 or4 kids and a fat wife he hates, so hopefully the piece of shit murderer is living in misery. I'm still not over it.

I absolutely adore your avatar! I have a guinea pig that is getting old so i'm wondering next time if i should get a hamster vs. guinea pig--got any advice? these are about the only kind of pets i can have due to my husband being allergic to everything

Not the same but my female betta fish died. Found her ass up, nose down in the aquarium. She looked a little listless lately but I thought it was due to the male pressing her. I hope the other fish don't croak.

I am very sorry for your loss. I had to put one of my cats down a week n a half ago. I have never had to make that choice and I bawled my head off and felt guilty as hell even though it was for the best... Im still freaked out about it. Im such an animal lover..

I think they just sell them in those tiny bowls so they can keep the males apart. If you put 2 or more males in an aquarium they will tear at each other until there is one, or none, left. They'll keep ok with regular fish in a regular sized (10 gallon+) aquarium. I think their life span is about 3 years. The female lived for about 1.5 years. She had a nice, deep red/purplish color.
I wonder if two females and one male can get along in the same aquarium...

It took me forever to even find a vet who was willing to accept a hamster patient. And even then medical tools aren't made in the proper scale. When Eddie was getting gassed before his lethal injection the doctor had to put the whole gas mask over his body because, well, there just isn't one that is meant to fit a small animal.
A few people have asked me how much it costs to euthanize a hamster. At the regular vets office during normal hours it is about 80-90 dollars including the check up and cremation and so on. At the emergency vet the same thing cost 160 dollars plus a couple of taxi rides across the city.
Where I take my rats, Willowdale Animal Hospital, on Sheppard near Yonge St, they have vets that specialize in small animals. They even have gas masks that fit on the muzzle of rats! Tiny little things.

Mine is at St Claire and Christie. One of the vets there has pet hamsters of her own and takes good care of mine when I bring them.
Due to special circumstances (sunday evening) I had to take Eddie to the 24 hour emergency place. I think he was the only rodent in the place.
Sadly I'm not convinced that many owners of small animals even have vets.

When my daughter was young I got her a gerbil. Bought the "kit", you know, gerb,aquarium, wheel, ect. He was a pretty cool little bugger, running on his wheel and making nest out of newspaper. Sadly I forgot to water him.
