Today's Gag Factor Great Woman of History is Madame Curie (1867-1934). Born of humble circumstances in Poland, Marie "Madame" Curie struggled to develope her keen intellect at the Sorbonne and became a key figure in theorhetical Physics, twice winning the Nobel Prize for her work and coining the term "radioactivity". She died of leukemia in 1934 as a result of her experiments with radioactive substances. A "curie" is now defined as a unit measure of radioactivity in honor of her. Sadly, despite her important and award winning work in Physics, Mrs. Curie was not admitted to the French academy of Sciences simply because of her sex.

PS. Though Marie Curie did die of leukemia she also lived until the age of 66, longer than average for someone born in 1867. It's not the case that she died young as a result of work on radioactivity. However, if I remember correctly, the museum in possession of her home cannot display her kitchen cookbook because it is still too radioactive.
