If you are in NYC, open the phone book and look up Sharpening Service or Cutlery. If you are too lazy for that, go to the corner, deli, bagel shop, restaurant, butcher shop, and ask them who sharpens their knives. If you know the guys in the store, you can just leave your knives there and the next week their guy will bring them back sharp, along with a bill for you.
I have a sharpening rod but it does not work. The thing is that there is just too many brands of knives.
The sharpening rod is just to tune up your knife. The problem is the edge needs to be thinned on a grinding wheel or a professional grinding machine.
