EU attacks 'Buy American' clauseQuote:
The clause seeks to ensure that only US iron, steel and manufactured goods are used in projects funded by the bill.
A European Commission spokesman said it was the "worst possible signal" the Obama administration could send out.
The EU will launch a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) if the clause remains, the spokesman said.
The EU and Canadian ambassadors to Washington have already warned that the clause could promote protectionism and trigger retaliatory moves.
The rescue plan has already been approved by the US House of Representatives and is under discussion in the Senate this week.

Who thinks we should put a buy American only clause in the Porkulus bill currently being debated in the Senate? I would like to see this clause with an exception only for our free trade partners.

And so it begins. Europe and the rest of the world will be obama's "friend" , only so long as it suits their interests. This topic and when he begins to ask for some of their troops for afghanistan should prover this point. Bear in mind Afghanistan is not Iraq, all of our friends were on our side in that war- there is no more bush- lets see all the cooperation Obama can muster for these issues.
On topic- I agree with you HAve 2- america only except with free trade partners.

Some group of investors should start a store, or website, that only sells American made products. With so much about the failing economy and job losses, I would rather pay 15-25% more for a product, than more in taxes for those fucking dolts in DC to piss away.

The biggest reason for the Steel, Textile, and Manufacturing industries fleeing over seas is UNIONS. Now there is a valid use for Unions, but every time there is a contract negotiation, the Union leaders need to show everyone what they got from management to justify their jobs. Same thing with our politicians, creating BS laws to justify their jobs.
In the steel industry, you go from paying a union guy $60/hour + benefits, to paying a Chinese guy $11 a week. EPA stuff factors in, but its nothing compared to the Medical Benefits and Pensions for workers. The oldest unions in our country were the first to have their industries flee. Walmart tries to bring crews of illegals to build new stores. A few years ago the AG in PA had 115 illegals rounded up at a Walmart construction site. Looking 10-20 years out, the only Unions that will probably be around are civil servants, i.e teachers, cops.

But this is not about industries fleeing oversees, this is simply a populist gesture. Campaign donors and unions need to be rewarded for being on the right side after all.

As I said, we should open it up to our free trade partners as well. Doesn't matter anyway sounds like Obama is caving in and planting his tongue directly in to the EU's ass. We've had Bush so long I had forgotten what it's like to have a spineless president.

What they're talking about is buying American made steel, concrete, and other construction materials for infrastructure projects, not the consumer crap sold at Walmarts.

Except there are hardly any American steel mills in operation, if any. And Cemex has bought all the redi-mix suppliers and on and on.
I'm not arguing with you h2cit, just lamenting the days of a mom and pop concrete or steel supplier.
