Anyone own one they can recommend? I have reams of negatives I want to digitalize. Looks like they range from 200.00 down. I already have a flatbed scanner so I don't need a combo unless it's an incredible deal.

Bornyo, if you can still get your hands on the following:

Konika-Minolta Dimage Dual Scan III (?)
Nikon Coolscan V / LS-50
HP Photosmart S20 (a friend just bought one of these & I've seen the results = very good)

I still shoot Kodachrome 64 positives regularly, for the time being at least, so mine gets plenty of use. I have a [url=]Nikon Coolscan V (LS-50)[url] which I bought in June '07, but that's about $550. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that B&H Photo sells it anymore. Check to see if KEH or Adorama sells such products maybe?

Avoid flatbed models, IMO, even though Epson makes a fairly decent, affordable product in those lines.

I honestly don't know anything about the PlusTek or Pacific Images companies, so try those at your own risk.

Yeah Hammacher has one for 99.00. Everything I'm reading says the difference is in the bundled software and how well the driver talks to windows. Like 2 mins per scan v 15 mins. I am very confused.

They say it works with Vista and XP. Ideally, whenever you buy something like this, you want to check whether it is "TWAIN compliant" (a sort of universal standard for imaging/scanning devices). If it is, then so long as drivers are installed, then most programs (Acrobat, Photoshop, etc) can usually import images directly from a TWAIN-compatible device. Photoshop can also do all those tricks like converting the colors on a negative into a positive, so bundled software becomes less important.

Also, if the device is compatible with the SANE Project, then it will usually work without hassles on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Their list of supported hardware is here...

I think I saw that same Hammacher one you mentioned in the SkyMall catalog. I think this is the same one? If you end up buying it, please report back on how you liked it.

That is the model from Hammacher. I'm looking at my old flatbed and old Lexmark printer and beginning to think I might get a multi-function. Most of the flatbeds that claim to do slides/negatives have a plastic frame that will hold the media in place. Review of an HP model. I'm going to check that compatibility list you posted and see what turns up.
