Ledbetter, 70, has said she did not learn about the sizable discrepancy in pay between her and her male co-workers until near the end of her 19-year career at a Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant in Gadsden, Ala. She sued, but the high court said in a 5-4 decision that she missed her chance to bring the action. The court said a person must file a discrimination claim within 180 days of a company's initial decision to pay a worker less than another doing the same job. Under the new law, each new discriminatory paycheck would extend the statute of limitations for an additional 180 days. That was the interpretation before the Supreme Court was asked to step in." Suck it, Supreme Court! The Repug defense was that workers should be aware within the first 180 days of hiring, that they were being paid less than the norm, workplace ban on discussing pay notwithstanding! Smells like...justice...

Two things will happen as a result of this. One, cost of hiring employing people in America will increase, making American businesses less competitive, especially those unable to outsource or relocate production oversees. Two, all kinds of 'professional victims', lawyers will have another good source of income.

I have no problem with this law. Or at least,with the intentions of this law.
Not sure how this is a win for Obama though. was he a champion of this bill when in the Senate?

So, you admit there has been unfair payroll discrimination, and you defend it because it will cost more to be fair? And you camp with the conservatives who claim the "moral high ground"?

No, private employers should be free to hire who they want and salaries should be determined by free agreement between employer and employee. Discrimination should be prohibited in the public sector, because equality before law is necessary for democracy, but private sector should be left alone.
As for moral high ground, I strongly believe in traditional liberal ideal of state as 'night watchman'. That means that the role of the state is to enforce laws, based on natural law and not to make people behave morally.
