Unfortunately, there's nothing organized about the crime that does exist.
It's limited to the occasional greedy asshole who will cheat hardworking talent and/or crew out of their well earned paycheck in order to pump up their already slim profit margin.

If everyone in the industry who owed me money from the last decade suddenly paid, I'd be almost $100K wealthier.

On the production side, very few, if any. One thing about the "mainstreaming" of porn is that the mob has moved onto other things, and less-stringent rules and new production technology means there isn't an "underworld incentive" to get involved or it costs tens of thousands of dollars just to run a camera to film. The decline in porn magazines as well figures; finding a printer who's willing to do porn is still tough, but its not like ten or twenty years ago where the only printers doing it were mob-connected.

When it comes to strip clubs, local escort agencies and brick-and-mortar porn stores? There's still a considerable presence. Not nearly as large as what I imagine it once was, but there's still money laundering, local official bribing, drug running and tax evasion. Its mainly concentrated in Las Vegas, Chicago, Florida and surprisingly Atlanta which has come up more and more.

There's been claims that the mobs been responsible for some of the larger porn bootlegging schemes but I don't think that's the case; maybe overseas, but not stateside.

Its just so much more profitable to deal with drugs where they have a monopoly on production and distribution.

I could totally see this being true about printers up to the early 80s, especially with harder stuff. Didn't the mob distribute "Deep Throat" when it was a near-mainstream hit in part because no one would touch it. Rightly so, too. The feds even went after Harry Reems.

That may be right about the pre-80s or even right now in the case of non-newsstand, under-the-counter hardcore porn of any kind. At the same time, that stuff could have been printed by an enterprising mom and pop operation.

What I was told was many of the weekly porn magazines that advertised local escorts and phone sex lines had connections with underworld printers, I imagine because of issues with advertising local hookers and strip clubs. Most disappeared in the early to mid-90s; Bill Margold's LA XPress is the only one I can even think that still exists in SoCal. Here (in San Diego) our printer for my old newspaper was bought out a few months ago and we couldn't find a single printer within a hundred miles willing to print it. We had an occasional porn picture (Though I think issues like Jizzlam where angry muslims were threatening to kill us or our bomb whoever printed it) but it wasn't even anything totally porn-y. I was really shocked to hear just how conservative most the printers down here were.

You are right about some of those free weeklies. But again, mostly the operators, and not all the printers. And that is all I will say!

Also, agreed, many printers are very conservative. I know one that would gladly print outrageous hardcore, but there was an incident where the pressmen themselves refused to print one photo, used in the context of a joke, of a chick with a dick (AKA a guy with tits) fucking a real girl.
