That's how it works almost everywhere in the US: if your wife gives birth then you're on the hook.

(the reason is to make sure there is SOMEONE paying the kid's bills, and that the someone is not taxpayers)

Some progressive states allow the husband to escape child support in cases like this, but only if the husband files a petition in court within a year of birth. It's assumed the (ex)wife will then file against the actual father for support.

I think Florida allows escaping child support only if the true father can be identified, ie, you can't get out of child support unless there is someone else to pay - the state will not pay the bill.
