Jet Ditches in Hudson; All Are Said Safe
A US Airways jetliner with 148 passengers and 5 crew members plunged into the icy Hudson River on Thursday afternoon five minutes after taking off from LaGuardia Airport, and a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration said everyone on board escaped safely.
Moments after the plane, a twin jet Airbus A320 bound for Charlotte, N.C., landed on the river near the mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel, at least a half-dozen small craft rushed to aircraft to rescue the freezing passengers and crew.
According to the Fire Department of New York, initial reports from the aviation agency said they thought that a flock of birds had hit the engine and caused the crash.
“It made this huge, gigantic splash, and I actually thought it was a boat crash at first,” said Fulmer Duckworth, 41, an employee at the Bank of America who watched the incident unfold from the 29th floor of his building at West 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue. “It didn’t occur to me that it was a plane in the water.”
Mr. Duckworth said he saw the plane spin counterclockwise in the water, and then begin drifting down the river with the current. The plane had taken off at 3:26 p.m., and the tide was on its way out, pulling the downed craft south down the frigid Hudson.

"that a flock of birds had hit the engine and caused the crash."
[Cheney]Yeah, yeah, yeah. Flock of birds my ass. It was a botched terrorist attack. Let's invade another country, while we still can. Hey, Dubya, roll the dice![/Cheney]

Yeah, but the Air Florida crash assured the career of Howard Stern who was working at DC-101 at the time, and put in a call to Air Florida's reservation desk and asked for the cost of a ticket from National Airport to the 14th Street bridge.

I wonder if Stern will call in to US Air from SIRIUS?
personally I love the 14th st. bridge...from wiki...
Quote:
In July 1989, the 14th Street Bridge gained national notoriety when police officers, frustrated by inability to clean up the problem in D.C.'s 14th Street red-light district, ordered a group of prostitutes to march from the Thomas Circle area, down 14th Street, and nearly to the bridge to Virginia. As the parade started up the approach ramp to the bridge, Washington Post photographer Stephen Jaffe happened by, followed by a Post reporter, causing the police officers to flee. The women returned to Thomas Circle. They never crossed the bridge, but because they were on the approach ramp, it's clear that the police officers' intent was to make them march into Virginia. The next day, after politicians from Virginia complained, others noted that Virginia police had sent homeless people across bridges into D.C.

Kudos to the Pilot and Copilot for an amazing landing and to the rest of the flight crew for getting everyone out OK.

Yeah, but the cold probably counter-acted all the chemicals and crap in that cesspool and kept the people from dissolving!

Absolutely...The pilots were awesome..but I hope that in all the praises that are obviously due the captain, that people don't forget that the rest of the flight crew all did their jobs masterfully as well.

Only if the pilot is a democrat...And being that he is an ex Air Force officer the chances of that are slim.

I do too. I would like to see the WHOLE crew up there. They all deserve recognition. AP is reporting that some of the ungrateful passengers are already lining up to sue.

I remember that Mutual of Omaha had Flight Accident Insurance kiosks in International airports at one time....maybe their credit card will have a supplemental program for that...

I had to fly out of LaGuardia two days after the 1989 crash. Only one runway was in use due to the other still being closed to retrieve the plane. Massive delays caused me to miss my connection in St. Louis. I had to spend 7 hours in the airport bar waiting for the next flight to Tucson. Needless to say I was quite hammered when I finally got on the flight.

I used to love flying, but it got increasingly less fun for obvious reasons (post 9/11 security) and some reasons I couldn't quite put my finger on. Then I realized it was the difference between being child sized versus 6'2" and 2+ bills. Might as well

Same goes as for my semi-derailment of DCA (Reagan National) nice to land into for convenience (Metrorail is a short walk away) but hellacious for pilots navigating around DC's "restricted airspace" and the lack of long runways....I mean why would the space shuttle land (piggy back w/747) to IAD (Dulles) if national had aduquate length.

I have dreaded flying since a H.S. friend was blown up over Lockerbie by the Libyans 20 years ago. Loaded is the only way I can get on board anymore.

I predict most of the passengers will end up suing the airline for bumping their heads. Especially in New York. At least half of them were probably Jewish. The chosen people aren't exactly averse to filing lawsuits. Their gratefulness will wear off in a few days.
Also, I bet Obama is furious because this thing has taken the spotlight off of him for a few days.

Exactly! I remember swimming around in those seats as a kid. My ass now goes numb well before takeoff.
I'm 6'2" & 280..When we travel any distance now, we just buy 3 seats and spread out. It's waaayyy cheaper than first class, and fairly comfortable.

Maybe the Jewish part of my comment was out of line (I'm bad), but I feel extremely confident that crybaby passengers will start filing the lawsuits in a few months. That's what parasite lawyers have done to our country. Whenever there is an opening, it must be exploited.

I think both the pilots and attendants are unionized, so the Repugs were against bailing them out and instead wanted the free market tendencies of the Hudson River to resolve the situation sans the heavy hand of government.

Sweet!
And please provide a link for the unionized security forces in the airports, because it is very important that they too are well-compensated, trained and able to prevent terrorists from boarding our planes!

Is it really as hard as pc liberals make it out to be? We're not allowed to pay special attention to Habbib the Raghead in airports because that would be rude (waaaaaaaaaa). Meanwhile, we stand in line for three hours so they can frisk Gertrude the 80 year old white lady from Iowa.
Yes, unions are such wonderful things. Where I currently live there are union bus drivers paid over $100,000 per year by taxpayers. Like bus drivers everywhere, they are uneducated retards doing unskilled work. And isn't it great how unions destroyed the American auto industry? Luv em!
