Rather than to respond to the absurd older men needed thread, let me line out the real reasons for bad sales:

Death of physical media +file sharing + lack of porn iTunes.

I don't need to dwell on the first two, I think they are obvious to everyone. The third is the main problem. Online porn sales have several huge problems:

1) The main model is subscriptions to porn sites featuring only their own material -- this is absurd -- a buyer is likely a fan of one or more porn chicks and isn't about to buy a subscription to a dozen or more porn sites at $20+ a month to see their scenes. That's just a joke. Plus, if you are old(er) school like me you wouldn't want to be giving your credit card info to any of them.

2) No universally playable format: the combination of Windows only and DRM infested files means that most can't be played on a wide variety devices, like the HDTV in the den, iPods/iPhones/Macs -- some of these are quite popular, you may have heard of them. Also recent studies I've seen show that Apple has something like 12% of the retail PC market but 70%+ of the dollars spent on computers -- in other words people who actually have money to spend on things like porn tend to buy Macs. (DVD Empire is just one of many examples of a general porn store which sells downloads in Windows only format).

If the porn industry wants out of its doldrums, it needs to try to duplicate iTunes: have one trusted brand name store, where all porn is available for purchase (not streaming or rental) in a universal, non-DRM format -- H.264 would be ideal, and prices will be reasonable. iTunes sells Hollywood movies for $9.99 and TV shows for $1.99. It seems to me that one day wonders like Big Wet Asses #32 have more in common with TV shows than Titanic and should be priced accordingly: $1.99 and certainly no higher than $4.99.

Do that, and watch sales sky rocket. Who would want to bother with the terrible quality of the flash video on "Tube" whatever, or the endless time waste of P2P when one can get cheap, high quality, guarantied to play porn in one central, trusted repository.

Knowing the porn industry, I'm not holding my breath for this to happen, but until it does, things will only go from bad to worse.

I agree, but here's the problem... let's assume you go $4.99 a flick to keep it reasonable - by flick I mean an entire DVD. When you customer pays with a credit card, you get screwed by the bank.$0.30 + 3-4%. Then you got bandwidth and storage. Let's say for arguments sake that the all distribution expenses run you the $0.99 making the sale $4.00. Even if you're doing an astounding 50/50 split of the net, the studio gets only $2.

Let's pretend that the DVD contains 4 scenes and it cost the studio $2000 a scene + another $2000 to edit, they're looking at $10g's and have to sell 500 copies before they break even. Then think about the digital distribution companies. Those douchbags gotta keep the hookers and blow flowing, then they have to lease expensive offices and $100K cars to feel good abouth themselves. They'd never do it for $2 a unit either.

Honestly, most DVDs are so poorly produced, they'll never sell that many. So you'd have to limit the service to proven adult companies, so you can jack the price up to $8-9 per unit to make any money.

Videobox has about 30 thousand scenes with about 25 new ones added daily available for download in .wmv, .mpeg and H.264. Depending on how long you sign up for- it can be as little as $10 per month for unlimited d/ls of DVD quality smut. Why would I pay $1.99 per scene? Videobox

For the iTunes model to hold, the studio gets 70%, the store keeps 30%.

$120 per year, ain't cheap. And I'm not suggesting paying $1.99 per scene, I'm suggesting paying $1.99 to $4.99 for the entire "movie" however many scenes that is.

Most people (me included) refuse to participate in any kind of subscription. That's why no matter how hard the music industry begged, Apple refused to launch any music subscription service, while their by the song/album/video/show/movie model has been amazingly successful. You may end up spending more than you would if you subscribed, but you are only paying for what you want. And if you stop downloading, you stop paying, put what you have bought is yours forever. Just like a CD or DVD.

That said Videobox really looks quite good, but of course didn't have the stuff I really wanted, like Pierre Woodman's Private Casting X or Hustler equivalent. Edit: and to get 640x480 resolution they charge $18 a month, not $10.

I've been hearing a lot of ads for www.porn.com on XM Radio. I think it's a subscription service that offers 15 yrs worth of unlimited downloads.(If you watched the porn continuously).

This is so true. The key is when you sign up, spend a few hrs scanning for stuff by your favorite sluts, sometimes they have an add a fave section or the retentive could make a list, then spend the month downloading like a madman. Usually these sites take cc payments from the now reputable online co's like epoch and ccbill, so that's not as worrisome now. Pay attention and note the date for the re-occuring charge and cancel before said date. Sometimes you can cancel midway through and still be able to dl til the end. Here's a final tip ; use a reloadable like a green dot debit card, put a few bucks on it, so if you forget the re-occuring charge date it could get denied for lack a funds.

Yea, but in the porno world most studios are lucky to get 30% from their VOD provider, so an extra 20% would be a blessing.

And this is exactly why porn doesn't make money. Did you take a look at that studio list???

Acid Rain
Adam & Eve Productions
Caballero Digital Release
Devils Film
Gentlemen's Video
Jet Multimedial
Jill Kelly Productions
Nectar Entertainment
Notorious Productions
Pink Visual
Platinum X
PowerHouse
Red Light District
Simon Wolf
Smash Pictures
Wildlife Productions
Zane Entertainment
Zero Tolerance Entertainment

To name a few...

Some of these assholes have 100 scenes on there. There are over 100 studios participating. At $7.95 a month these fucker's are earning a whopping $0.07 a month off this. Then they wonder why their business is going down.

Actually I hadn't even loaded the site. I hate ads on XM. The only reason I remember them is Ron & Fez are doing live reads of the ad, and they are hilarious.

Looks like most of those studios are already out of business.

its simply survival of the fittest...I believe Playboy owns Adult.com

so it not only has its "softcore" niche market but all of the Adult.com "hardcore" sites as well.

Yea, but somebody obviously has ownership rights so they can whore out the content for just about free or it wouldn't still be online.

How can it be survival of the fittest, when the deadpool is still corrupting the value for the live companies? It's more like "My company is dead, so why not screw everybody else."

ownership rights of the content goes to person that has sued the dead company....since they have no $$$ to pay the court will go with what tangible assets they have...their content...

but you may want to consult PL with this answer.

Nobody sues dead companies unless there are outstanding claims...

If I owned 100% of the stock for a porn company and shut it down, as a creditor of the company I could simply transfer assets to myself. Claims against a company get settled in the order based on the size of the claim. Even if you own a majority of the outstanding stock in a defunct corporation, you walk away with a majority of assets - without even putting a corp in bankruptcy.

If there are claims its simpler to just negotiate a settlement with a creditor, pay the discounted charge and then keep the content. It's these guys that are continuing to dump content online for next to nothing.
