Rather than to respond to the absurd older men needed thread, let me line out the real reasons for bad sales:

Death of physical media +file sharing + lack of porn iTunes.

I don't need to dwell on the first two, I think they are obvious to everyone. The third is the main problem. Online porn sales have several huge problems:

1) The main model is subscriptions to porn sites featuring only their own material -- this is absurd -- a buyer is likely a fan of one or more porn chicks and isn't about to buy a subscription to a dozen or more porn sites at $20+ a month to see their scenes. That's just a joke. Plus, if you are old(er) school like me you wouldn't want to be giving your credit card info to any of them.

2) No universally playable format: the combination of Windows only and DRM infested files means that most can't be played on a wide variety devices, like the HDTV in the den, iPods/iPhones/Macs -- some of these are quite popular, you may have heard of them. Also recent studies I've seen show that Apple has something like 12% of the retail PC market but 70%+ of the dollars spent on computers -- in other words people who actually have money to spend on things like porn tend to buy Macs. (DVD Empire is just one of many examples of a general porn store which sells downloads in Windows only format).

If the porn industry wants out of its doldrums, it needs to try to duplicate iTunes: have one trusted brand name store, where all porn is available for purchase (not streaming or rental) in a universal, non-DRM format -- H.264 would be ideal, and prices will be reasonable. iTunes sells Hollywood movies for $9.99 and TV shows for $1.99. It seems to me that one day wonders like Big Wet Asses #32 have more in common with TV shows than Titanic and should be priced accordingly: $1.99 and certainly no higher than $4.99.

Do that, and watch sales sky rocket. Who would want to bother with the terrible quality of the flash video on "Tube" whatever, or the endless time waste of P2P when one can get cheap, high quality, guarantied to play porn in one central, trusted repository.

Knowing the porn industry, I'm not holding my breath for this to happen, but until it does, things will only go from bad to worse.
