I was actually watching the game when the Lindros hit happened. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in hockey.
Too bad Stevens didn't get another year in. That strike ripped the heart out of hockey.

To hit Lindross out.... ouch. What I remember from some Olympics, this Lindross was quiet a big beast himself.

The Kariya hit is pretty fucken brutal.

To freestylah. Those were all perfectly legal hits, shoulder to chin. The first thing you teach your kid when he reaches checking age is to play heads up. Lindros was indeed a force but he and his brother both had concussion issues.

The Big E had a problem with keeping his fucking head up when he had the puck. Some say he developed this habit because he was so dominant as a junior.

It's funny you say that, Stylah. My old boss was this Welsh dude who loved to gamble on sports and became a huge hockey fan eventually. The first time he saw two players drop gloves and start slugging his jaw hit the floor. He had never seen a game and he jumped out of his barstool yelling holy shit those two guys are fighting what the fuck etc etc. It must seem odd to someone who doesn't know hockey.

I watched hockey mostly during the Olympics and I think (but correct me if necessary) that it's less brutal than what TUP and TP just linked. I like hockey, but it amounts to nothing here in Holland and it's not aired.

I watched TP's clip, next question. The commentator says: "We're 10 minutes into the game.....". At that moment, there's fighting all over the place.

Do these players get banned for the rest of the match? Do you get your money back, if there's no more game possible, because of lack of players?

Fighting in an NHL game isn't considered anything that bad. It was FAR worse when I was a kid in the 70s and the benches would clear. Though there are fights less than even 10 years ago, it is not an unusual occurrence in a game.

The penalty for fighting is 5 minutes each. If the referees feel that one player "instigated" the fight, he gets an additional 2 minutes so that the other team gets a power play.

Sometimes the referees will not call a fight "fighting" and the players will then get only 2 or 4 minutes for "roughing".

To stop the mass fights that were so prevalent in the past, no one is allowed to leave the bench during a fight. If a player on the ice gets involved in a fight between two players, they will call a "3rd man in" violation. This player is then removed for the game and is subject to further discipline by the league.

Freestylah, the NHL has the philosophy that the fighting helps discourage cheap stick work which is more likely to result in serious injury. Fatman is right, the league since the late 80s is nothing like it once was.
