I'm curious if any New York City XPT members have any comments on this.
pancakes
"It's been almost 24 hours since the intoxicating and overwhelming scent of maple syrup assaulted New Yorkers' olfactory nerves again. And even though this is the sixth time the smell has struck, it's unclear where the smell is coming from... The Office of Emergency Management told us that there were 37 calls to 311 between 9 p.m. and midnight last night about the smell."
EDITED to add: Am I the only one who doesn't agree with the smell of syrup being "intoxicating"?

This kind of thing could be a tourist attraction for places that actually make maple syrup and sugar.

It's probably the government- using an innocuous smelling chemical to test dispersal of planned mind controlling agents. After the inauguration they will begin releasing Obama-Koolaid

For some strange reason, this does not sound implausible.

We could accomplish great things if we could convince the whole population to fart in unity.
Though I am not sure if the poutine and French Canadian pea soups would add favourably to the golden odor in the air.

A few months ago I had meth that was like maple syrup. It was not bunk or anything but it burned weird. Maybe it's a methlab or something.

11/2007 "30 Rock":
While the maple syrup smell remains a two-year-old mystery to us, 30 Rock entered the fray with a hypothesis. On last night's episode, Liz Lemon, who smells waffles from her Upper West Side apartment, calls Tracy Jordan to remind him to practice his Re-Run dance for the What's Happening! sketch. But Tracy, in his NJ home, says that the smell of waffles is distracting him. Then Liz gets another call - it's Jack Donaghy, over on the Upper East Side:
Jack: Do you smell maple syrup? Liz: Yes! Jack: Don't panic, Lemon, it's probably not a chemical attack. Liz: What do you mean, probably? Jack: It's probably just a strange wind pattern coming over those factories in Staten Island where food flavors are made. I don't think it's northrax. Liz: What's northrax? [Tracy starts his Re-Run dance] Jack: It's a chemical agent we sold to the Saudis in the 1980s that smells exactly like maple syrup. But I don't think this is it.
Mystery solved.

I drove by some plant in NJ that creates fragrances for the food and cosmetics industry - depending on the day you drove by it could smell like cinammon, licorice, etc. The rest of the area smelled like, well, NJ.

Utah, Idaho and Wyoming represent the last vestige of the "American Heartland" as they were the last three states to proffer Bush >50 % approval. But they too, eventually dropped below that threshold...even white separatist/polygamists/Limbaugh listeners learned to hate Bush as much as the other 47 states have done for years before them...

Reminds me of this story: wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_molasses_disaster The Boston Molasses Disaster, also known as the Great Molasses Flood and the Great Boston Molasses Tragedy, occurred on January 15, 1919, in the North End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. A large molasses tank burst and a wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35 mph (56 km/h), killing 21 and injuring 150. The event has entered local folklore, and residents claim that on hot summer days the area still smells of molasses.

Told ya - I drove by some plant in NJ that creates fragrances for the food and cosmetics industry - depending on the day you drove by it could smell like cinammon, licorice, etc. The rest of the area smelled like, well, NJ. ----- New Jersey smells always crowd out others.
