Ok I know I am new here but I have to bitch somewhere. I have built 100's of computers and installed windows more times than jerked off. (Not really) But FUCK ME. Who in the hell thought this bloated, broken, non-functional sack of computer written monkey spunk would ever be better than XP. And better than Apple...Are they out of their fuckin minds? All I want is to get my TV tuner to work in Vista. I paid 159.00 bucks for this dog and pony show and half of my video editing software either won't work or only works half assed. Jesus...everyone who had a hand in writing this garbage should be locked in a room with barbara strisend and bill o'reilly with barry manilow music playing in the background Damn Steve Jobs is going belly up from cancer and this this fuck turd is woth another billion dollars.

Is that part of Vista or XP? Because I read they've stopped making XP.

Because my mother got a new laptop with Vista for Christmas. My brother went with my father and picked it out for her. I asked my brother why he didn't get XP because of all the problems Vista has.

In all honesty, it is not that vista is completely bad, but that xp has been out so long and it supports 99% of the hardware and software where vista is written with a new code and has problems working with some stuff. Sooner or later people are forced to buy new equipment that is vista ready.

I think XP is still mounted on some computers, like those mini laptops that would choke on Vista, but most pc's are now sold with Vista. I think MS is still licensing XP and I suspect most corporate customers are loading their equipment with XP. It's going to be like Win2000 - out there for years until Vista, like WinME, dies and Windows 7, if it is not a fuck up, takes over.

I've been using Windows Vista Ultimate for about a year and half now. I've pretty much worked out most of the kinks with my software and hardware.
I do like how Vista is able to repair itself [something XP was never able to do properly for me at least and I had more than 1 PC just quit functioning and needing a system reload with 1998].
But, I was never a fan of XP, either.

yeah but the problem is that some new hardware and software still doesn't play nice with vista. So it is not just about buying new...buying new and making sure it works with vista

Chemo Kid: why did you install Vista in the first place? Didn't you read the reviews or hear how much it sucked?

Just trying to keep up with the time. Also I love getting computers to do more than they are meant to. Overclocking etc.. But Vista just sucks ass. I mean it's about as worthless as Windows Mellinium. More money for Billy Gates.

Oh read up on it. Had even been a beta tester for microshit. I just thought they would release updates that would correct the problems. I was wrong.

I was definitely going to say move to linux next. Have you tried Gentoo or FreeBSD?

I "upgraded" to xp earlier tonight And now I'm reading about Windows 7 that will be release late this year.
Windows 7 beta running great here on one of our machines - it is everything Vista should have been. Runs apps faster than not just Vista but even XP, according to various review sites. Runs great on older hardware (with less memory) than Vista's requirements. Final release will be even faster after debugging overhead is removed.
Anyone happy with XP should definitely skip Vista if possible, and wait out Windows 7. Or, grab the beta off P2P or Usenet and try it out.

How is the backwards compatibility for W7?
Will I still be able to play Monkey Island or should I stick to XP?

How about games that came out for 95 or 98? Like Fallout 2 or Deus Ex?
Just curious, I have a huge library of software that spans years. (Sitting on my desk right now is a "Redneck Rampage" game disc from 1997). I just need to be able to use my 12 year old software.

It can be a fun multiplayer game. I like having a non-aggression pact that expires once everyone has progressed up to full technologies.
Then the game becomes a war between whoever can build the hugest mechs fast enough to survive.

Microsoft Vista voted tech world's top "Fiasco"Quote:
It's official, Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system gets the prize for being the most over-hyped, under-performing information and communication technology (ICT) project. Windows Vista garnered 5,222 of 6,043 votes (86 percent) entered via the Web to snag top honors in the first-ever Fiasco Awards announced in Barcelona, Spain, today, beating out other contenders, including Google's Lively virtual world, the One Laptop per Child computer (developed by the Nicholas Negroponte-chaired One Laptop Per Child Association, Inc.) and Second Life. Second prize went to SAGA, the oft-malfunctioning administration and academic management system developed by Spain's Catalan Education Department for public school teachers in Catalonia.
Vista was announced in July 2005 and hit the market in January 2007 after a mega PR blitz by Microsoft, which promised it would be a slick, secure successor to the company's popular Windows XP operating system. Vista came with an eye-catching graphical user interface, and Microsoft positioned the operating system's Windows Media Center software as a tool that would make the PC the new hub of home entertainment systems. What Microsoft made less clear was that many customers couldn't run Vista without upgrading their PCs.
What's more, the Fiasco Awards Web site points out, the new operating system was complicated to navigate and had compatibility problems with many programs and hardware drivers, leading many people to just stick with Windows XP. Vista was such a dismal failure that many PC makers even recommended that consumers steer clear of it.
The company's recent introduction of Windows 7—Vista's successor after only two years—indicates that even Microsoft views Vista with disappointment, according to the awards organizers. The lesson, they said: more testing should be done to check reliability and performance before rolling out major product-marketing campaigns.
The purpose of the Fiasco awards is to "promote critical spirit and a positive attitude towards failure, which is a necessary stage in the road to success," say the award's organizers, who are identified on the Web site only as a "group of people linked to the ICT (information and communication technology) sector." The site notes that Thomas Edison made more than 1,000 attempts before inventing the light bulb, "so he learned how not to do it in more than 1,000 different ways."
Other finalists: Second Life (the virtual world's Web software must be downloaded on one's PC, which excludes people who don't own their own computers), One Laptop per Child (a plan hatched by the developed world to bring computers to the developing world at $100 a pop, only they it ended up costing nearly twice that), and Google Lively (a virtual world that relied more on the company's brand than on any interesting features to compete with Second Life; it was put out of its misery at the end of 2008, after just five months of operation).
