Travolta and Preston said the kid had "Kawasaki disease" to try to provide cover for his behavior. Kawasaki disease afflicts arteries around the heart and would have no affect on his mental developement or behavior. They could not or would not ever admit he had a brain problem because Scientology is supposed to be able to fix all that. Maybe the church could have gotten rid of the kid without the parents? What really gets my antenna up is the fact that it went down in the Bahamas and that it solves a major- major-major PR dilemma. The Church of Scientology is ruthless.

I've read that Travolta and Cruise were hooked the same way. As teens they were convinced that through Scientology they could change anything about themselves they wish - including their homosexual tendencies. Their gayness and other secrets would have been revealed to the church during the patented "auditing" process. At the same time, the church royally kissed their asses because of their celeb publicity value and offered a mafia-like aberatus to help shield their private lives.

Say what you want about the major world religions, but they usually believe what they're selling. Scientology leaders cynically studied how people are drawn to the various religions to craft a business model. L Ron Hubbard and David Miscavige believed in Xenu as much as I believe in the Easter Bunny.
